Breaking down the stereotypes one Minnesotan at a time!
If you haven’t seen the movie “Drop Dead Gorgeous”, I highly recommend! It’s a comedic film poking fun at a “pageant” in Minnesota. While this movie is a good laugh, it poorly represents what titleholders, like myself, do for @missamerica . Since this year is the the movie’s 20th anniversary, I was invited come to Waconia, the town where it was filmed, to watch the movie with community members. Afterwards, I presented a talk comparing and contrasting Miss America 2.0 and this movie’s portrayal of competitions like ours. I’m so grateful to the community of Waconia and Kellie Sites for welcoming me and my message last night! Any chance I get to spread awareness of what Miss America is really about makes my heart happy!
Hey there everyone! 💕 it’s been a while since I introduced myself- my name is Courtney and I am the artist behind the brush. I’ve been a professional makeup artist for almost 6 years now and it’s been such a fulfilling career. I have a five year old daughter and am passionate about weightlifting 🏋️♀️ Recently I dabbled in carpentry and build a table (not sure why but it sounded like fun!) and I love anything artistic. I’ve been a bridal makeup artist for most of my career but have recently started into boudoir as well as studio shoots 😊 honing my skills and becoming the best artist I can be is something I’ll always be chasing so I can give my clients the best possible experience. Thank you to all my past, present and future brides for making my business what it is- and I can’t wait for you to see all the amazing changes taking place very soon 😉 📷: @chelseafeltyphotography

I believe the choice to become a mother is the choice to become one of the greatest spiritual teachers there is. I am grateful I chose you and that you chose me. 💜
There are no words to describe the transformation that our relationship has taken in the last year. 💜
This beautiful soul is my mama, mom, mamacita, mommy, Miss America, Amelia Rose.. she is my creator, the Goddess who held me within her womb for 10 whole months. The woman who despite the opinions of others decided to keep me and love me without conditions, even when she was unaware of what it meant. 💜
Together we have defied all odds and conquered all adversity. She is my hero, my safe place, my comfort. She is where I learned to love with my whole heart. She taught me strength. 💜
It's taken many years to understand, appreciate and not blame her for all the wrongs in my life. Without her, I wouldn't be me. She is my best friend. She is my everything. 💜
I love you mama. I cherish you. 💜
5 whole days until she comes to Durango to spend time with us. #mama#mamabear#missamerica#spiritualteacher#togetherweconquer#shegetsitfromhermama#ryznphx#INTUITIVECREATIONSLLC#universalhealingtribe
Amazing! First time ever that Miss America, Miss USA, and Miss Teen USA are all African-American. Miss America is a classically trained opera singer and Miss USA is a civil litigation attorney. I'm so thrilled to see that they're such strong powerhouse women I can cheer on. ⠀
What fabulous role models or mentors have you recently discovered?⠀

I can personally confirm that Seedsters give the best hugs in the whole state of Mississippi 😍 I had the blessing of visiting @mustardseedms yesterday to hang out with these incredible individuals, and I even got to pick up some of the pottery they created themselves! Lots of hugs + new friends + new painted pottery = a VERY happy #MissMississippi2019 🥰 #MissAmerica
Did you know when you are apart of an oppressed group, your daily encounters/experiences cause trauma? Parents, it’s something to have on your radar as your kiddos develop and really start to grapple with identity. Did you know you have to work through trauma both physically AND mentally? It’s true. And it sucks. Cause I only want to process my trauma once, thanks. In June 2013 I won the title of Miss Iowa (Not the trauma) and immediately I became WORLD news. The headline across the world was, “Disabled Girl Goes to Miss America.” (This was the trauma) So, why was the headline and attention so traumatic? It was traumatic because I didn’t identify as a disabled person. It was like the world was telling lies about me and I didn’t know how fix it. Trauma. Lots of it. So I had a major identity crisis at the age of 23. My body and my mind rebelled because I refused to process my trauma. Anxiety and depression hit at full force, my friends. I finished off my year as Miss Iowa weighing less than 100 lbs...cause my body was BEGGING me to sit with my trauma and process it. It sucked and it was lonely for a really long time. Once I sat down with a therapist...all the pieces that didn’t make sense in my brain started to come together. I bravely started to read about/meet with disability experts/advocates/mentors. I learned about social constructs and I learned my current place within one. I learned I was disabled. But then another important thing happened, I got mad. Why had I shunned this amazingly strong group my entire life? It’s because I thought disability was a bad word. I thought it meant weakness, pity, sadness, complete inability....all things that are wildly untrue. Nobody had educated me on the power of my own community. This is WHY I now yell so loudly into the void. If I can help just ONE person understand social construct, identity, and the power of understanding the way the world responds to us....my traumatic experience will have been with it. 🔥❤️(Go read The Body Keeps Score. It’s my fav) #disability#pride#missiowa#missamerica#pageantry#bighairdontcare#beyoutiful#process#educate#inspire#trauma#disabilityawareness
One of my favorite parts of each week is stopping by @eatfitgowichita to pick up some healthy meals that fit my on-the-go lifestyle this year. I can always count on fresh meals in my fridge that I can just pop in the microwave real fast. Stop by and see Ashley and the team at the Wichita location or any @eatfitgo , I promise you’ll love it ☺️
The worst cannabis I've ever seen: Mugwort 😂 Bae thought I had packed some herb when really I was trying to get some peaceful sleep. Along with inducing vivid dreams Mugwort has medicinal properties when smoked it's a remedy for painful menstruation, stimulates the digestion, treats colic, diarrhea, constipation, and headaches! 🌱💚 #thinkgreen#mugwort#smokeables#rainbowpride#missamerica#sweetdreams
"Whenever AIDS has won, stigma, shame, distrust, discrimination and apathy was on its side. Every time AIDS has been defeated, it has been because of trust, openness, dialogue between individuals and communities, family support, human solidarity, and the human perseverance to find new paths and solutions." - Michel Sidibé, Executive Director of UNAIDS
•Celebrating Papa Britt✨
Today is the day Papa Britt completes another trip the sun. I’ve been asked in countless interviews who my biggest role model is and this guy has been the topic several times now. He selflessly gives to others and is the best grandfather, dad, and friend anyone could ask for. In June, the week of the Miss NC competition, he was diagnosed with small cell carcinoma and has endured brain surgery, radiation treatments, and physical therapy. Despite his prognosis, he has maintained a great attitude and continues to love others around him. He truly is a superman and has always encouraged me to reach for the stars! Love you more Papa Britt 💙 #missfayetteville#missnc#missamerica#rolemodels
Like plants and produce, people can be ‘in season’ and ‘out of season’, too! In our culture, we’re constantly expected to be productive. Not only in our work and academics, but in our personal relationships as well. This can lead to burn out quickly. •
Don’t be afraid to let people know how you’re doing. Contrary to popular belief, it’s okay to NOT be okay all the time! Step back. Reset. Focus on you for a change. And feel the difference it makes in your life 💕 Happy Friday, y’all! • #MissStatesville#mao#MissAmerica#mentalhealth#relax#MissNorthCarolina#breathe

Let’s be honest with one another for a second in a segment I like to call #ForRealFriday (okay i just made that up but it sounds good- I think it’ll stay). The other day I was on a Live and someone asked me if I ever struggled with being confident. YES. Want to know a secret? I still do sometimes. Everyone has insecurities and what I call my “dark day moments”— I call them moments because that’s all they are... they aren’t a year of your life, even though it can feel that way at times. Find the positive everyday in the little things. A big part of my story is overcoming my self doubts... I can’t wait to tell you more about this aspect of my journey!! 💫 #MissAmerica#MissOK19#SelfLove#Confidence#MAO
