“I need to problem solve. I don’t have another big triangle to finish my snowflake, what can I do?”
Then this smart student realized that she could build another big triangle out of smaller triangles. #problemsolving#kindergarten#mathskills#snowflakes
I have a few goals for R this year, some skills I’d like to focus on... recognizing numbers is one of them! .
Starting with 1, 2 & 3, while he was napping I covered the house in post-it notes!! Adapted from @new_trick_kids shape finding activity. He spotted them straight away when he woke- of course! They really were everywhere!!! 🤣
R’s job was the find the post-it, run it back to the wall and pin it back up on the wall with its other “number friends” 🥰
“Another one, another one” R kept saying after each one! While he didn’t always get the name of the number correct this exposure through fun games is how they learn and eventually it will stick!! .
See the post it with the ⚫️⚫️? That was to encourage another mathematical skill, 1:1 correspondence is pointing to an object and assigning it a number. I was asking R to point to each ⚫️ and count them. Exposure to numbers in this form is encouraging subitising which is being able to recognise a number pattern without having to count each dot. While R is a fair way off being able to subitise it’s never too early to expose him to it. 😁
Smiles during math?!
No this was because I told her Nana wanted a picture, but we don't shed many tears during math ...except that they don't want to do it. They would rather be playing, but it takes 15 minutes most days and they complete their lessons almost independently. That is unless they daydream or drag their feet.
We use Rod and Staff which is a more traditional method of math focusing on foundational skills and repetition. This is perfect for my kids who have my problem of being able to cram/memorize quickly but struggle to retain long term. Also, while it has lessons for teacher instruction I pare them down quite a bit. My girls are intuitive enough to build on the previous lessons and patterns in math concepts. They then complete lessons with little interference from me! I love leading them towards a self-teaching mentality. I want to create life long learners, and be able to educate themselves independently when grown when discovering new tasks and skills.
