Another framed illustration. In the best traditions of me, started without clear final vision. Initially, it supposed to be a desert for #madmapmarch , but somehow sketching bring me to that. I like it, by the way. My first red-black art.
-Bridge on Hamek-
[Humans 61, Halflings 12, Half-elves 2 ]
This village has been built 200 years ago when some workers, sent by the King to built the Bridge on Hamek river, asked fields to settle here as salary for their work. One of them, especially, pretended to be fell in love with a mysterious ‘spirit of the forest’. Years later came out that the worker’s lover was not a spirit, neither a fey, but just a lonely elf living in the wood. One day she dropped a couple of twin toddlers at the doorstep of the worker and then left the area.
The two babies were called Ham (the boy) and Mek (the girl) and they grew up between humans. Nowaday they are the elders and chiefs of the village.
-Ham and Mek House-
North-east point of the intersection road/river.
The twins got both married long time ago, but when they became widower and widow and started to get old, they moved together. The house is pretty big, because it is also used for community meeting and for children education. Ham’s granddaughters still live in the village, but Mek lost tracks of her only grandson that left the village in search of adventure. Now she is looking forward to someone that could help her find him.
-Crosswater Inn & Tavern-
West side, near to south gate.
The only hospitality of the small village. Madame Cerbosia, the host, is small even for an halfling but can handle easily giant bowls of her renowned mushroom soup with rye crisps.
-Barneys’ farm and mill-
South, just outside village palisade.
Barneys are an honest and humile family of peasants with lot of children. They raised a giant ox they are planning to enroll at the county fair, but lately pixies and other feys are trying to lure the bovine in the deep of the forest. Barneys saved the situation until now but they are very tired of doing guard duties.
Desperately trying to catch up for the final days of #madmapmarch !!! Here are days 1-3 put together, forest, camp, and cliffs! Gonna try to use the final map as an outline for my new homebrew D&D setting for 5e. It’s gonna be a magic heightened world with double spell slots for spell casters and some homebrew abilities for physical fighters :)
A barren and desolate land. Freezing winds and blinding snow have forced many a traveler to turn back, or worse, stranded them in an icy prison. Towering pines dominate this region, growing in sparce clumps where they're able.
And this is where our backstory begins.
As a child, Gruffneer was small. Bred from hardship and the brutal region he was born into, he was never a large child. His small village, tough to find on even maps from the day, was not prosperous, but they had what they needed. And they were at peace. Until... "Gruffneer wake up!" Gruffneer's mother shouted, shaking a very young Gruffneer awake, and pushing him outside.
For their village was under attack.
Frost Wolves, angry, ruthless beasts had descended from the mountains, searching for a meal. All around him, Gruffneer saw the devastation they had caused, overwhelming the townspeople easily. Running into a nearby mine, he hid in an empty crate, until the last sounds of the wolves had vanished. Peeking out he saw his village destroyed, when suddenly a lone wolf leapt from the shadows and clawed Gruffneer across the chest. The wolf turned and fled, leaving a confused and injured Gruffneer for dead.
Days later, a bandit gang, The Tundra Rovers, happened upon the ruined village and began looting. Finding a new Gruffneer, one that had healed his wounds and transformed into one of the High Wolves, a man capable of taking on certain wolfish traits, the Rovers kidnapped him, and made him their prisoner.
It was after 3 years that the Tundra Rovers mad a costly mistake. Wanting to use Gruffneer's heightened sense of smell to find seek out new treasures, they stumbled upon a small camp of adventurers. The camp of Carwal, Z'kar, and Lady Silvertone. An attempt to attack forced the Rovers, unprepared for such a resistance to flee, leaving behind a starving and chained up Gruffneer. Carwal took pity on the younger man, ripping his chains apart and freeing him.
It was then that Gruffneer made his promises. Pledging to folllow and defend Carwal, and to one day seek revenge for his people.
The whistling of these oddly narrow shutes, created by heated air escaping past molten lava, can be heard from miles off shore. Often mistaken for a siren's call, these islands are avoided by many sailors.
Day #21 of Mad Map March.
