The thing about a non 9-to-5 job is that there is no structure in life. You have to find your own structure for how you spend your time, and how you go after your next endeavor. I need to work more on that discipline. I think to really pursue the arts, you need to be so disciplined, and I think people underestimate that. I feel a lot of people that you talk to think that if you’re pursuing the arts, you're probably a slacker or you're trying to take the easy route. But it's a ton of work. It’s a lot of discipline. Sometimes it’s like “I’ve done this, I’ve been working on it all month and I’m exhausted, so I’m just going to lie down and watch Netflix for a straight week and binge eat.” And it happens, it happens to a lot of people, but you have to motivate yourself, pick yourself back up, and find your own structure. But that’s what we were told. Stand up for yourself. And that’s hard to do if you don’t know who you are. We were expected to define ourselves at such an early age. And if we didn’t do it, others did it for us. They asked me what I wanted to be, then told me what not to be. We were being told that we somehow must become what we are not, sacrificing what we are, to inherit the masquerade of what we will be. I was being told to accept the identity that others would give me. And I wondered, what made my dreams so easy to dismiss? My dreams got called names. Silly. Foolish. Impossible. But I kept dreaming. This is who I am. This is how I stand up for myself - TED talk (Up Until To This Day) by Shane Koyczan
