This is Blood Leaf aka Iresine. I get asked about this plant a lot, due to its striking red leaves and it’s all year round colour. It’s not an uncommon plant but I think it is super underrated in gardens in the northern rivers. A lot of my clients want more colour to break up the green, and although blood leaf isn’t native, I use it occasionally for a burst of brightness. Propagation is simple as you can see in this video and it’s the perfect time of year to do so now. It likes full sun to semi shade, it can handle a hard pruning and it looks best when it’s mass planted around rockeries or boundaries. Low maintenance, pretty and unusual, blood leaf also does well indoors, in a bright and warm position.
