This schematic map shows Frederick Law Olmsted’s preliminary design for improving the Muddy River. By 1880, urban growth had taken its toll, and the once-flowing tributary was notoriously polluted and prone to flooding. The City of Boston hired Olmsted to create a beautiful public space that could alleviate these problems. In this plan, Olmsted envisioned adding gentle meanders to the river’s course and transforming a swamp into a park pond. Today, climate change and large scale development have exacerbated some of the problems Olmsted worked to address 140 years ago, and landscape architects have a renewed focus on designing open spaces that are not only functional and beautiful, but also resilient. Join us tonight, September 20, along with the Boston Society of Landscape Architects and @nbbjdesign for “Resilient Places + People,” a panel discussion that explores the future of resilient landscape design in Greater Boston. The event will be at 6pm in Rabb Hall in the Central Library of the @bplboston.
PS- And be sure to check out this map in our exhibition “Breathing Room: Mapping Boston’s Green Spaces” before it closes at the end of this month!

TBT to a collaborative seminar in spring 2017 entitled “How to Live Together,” led by Jefferson Visiting Professor Paola Viganò, with graduate architecture and landscape architecture students from @aschool_uva. The analysis and proposals aimed to reveal and highlight opportunities for growth in Appalachia, strengthening values held by local communities and inviting them to imagine a future that is theirs. Pictured here are maps depicting the transect from the Atlantic Ocean to the Mississippi Valley, underground and surface mining, agricultural plains, and microclimate corridors. ⠀
