Uncomfortable it looks like the men sitting on their homemade Petta - handmade wooden racks that are firmly anchored in the coral and buried. The stilts are shaped like a cross, the fishermen only sit on a thin branch and, depending on their condition, simply have their feet dangling down.
Since the end of the Second World War, this technique exists and depending on the season, the fishermen sit on their stakes, especially in the morning and in the late afternoon, patiently waiting for hours until a fish bites. Only during the monsoon, when no fish swim in the shallow water, the fishermen disappear from the water. After the 2004 tsunami, stilt fishermen seemed to have long disappeared from the beaches of Sri Lanka. Now, however, the real fishermen and those who climb onto their stilts for little change from tourists sit regularly in the sea again and decisively shape the image of this extraordinary stretch of beach between Unawatuna and Weligama.
The tradition of stilt fishermen exists only in Sri Lanka. Although most fishermen now continue the tradition for tourists, it remains a unique sight worldwide.
