Unless you are new around here (if so, welcome!), then you already know my husband and I traveled to Europe + moved across states earlier this year. These events both amounted to major shifts for me, mentally. Because honestly? Pre-trip and pre-move, I was overworked and regularly exhausted.
In the new year I set big goals for my professional and personal growth, but somewhere along the line I missed the memo that growth doesn't always mean bigger, better, faster. BLUEPRINT was also growing rapidly at this time. Rather than scale slowly, I dove in headlong. And so it took a bout with multiple stress-induced illnesses in late spring (oh hello, pneumonia 👋🏼), a head-clearing trip abroad, and an out-of-state move to help me step out of the mental frenzy. To help me remember that I can live the way I choose, and not use financial or other career marks as barometers for success.
Almost anyone would agree that he/she wishes for a simpler life and values simple things. It's a great motto. Also a bit of a cliche buzzword—because who wants a simple paycheck? A simple business reputation? The conflict is real and one that I've struggled to put into words lately. Every month I have been shifting slowly towards a simpler work life; this has been both rewarding and difficult.
It has meant seeing growth as, sometimes, meaning less instead of more.
I'm still working hard and dreaming big around here. Absolutely loving what I do + the people I'm honored to do it with. The difference is all head space: instead of obsessing in the career department, my goal now is to start balancing a natural, positive business drive with other simple things + people that make me happy, healthy, and at peace.
It will take more time to get there. I share because I value transparency and you all can relate, too. Many of you who work with me have described ongoing work stress struggles, the kind we small business owners can relate to with special angst. As for me, I'm looking forward to seeing what simplicity may offer: I won't hit ALL of my big goals for 2019, but I will meet many others. And that's okay.
