Self grading station! As a combo class, I have to balance working with both grades. I also have a para who works with the grade that I’m not with. I get about 30-40 minutes to teach the main lesson and monitor practice and then my para pulls small groups I help fill gaps while I teach the other grade. .
Last week, I started a self grading station! I teach the first graders their math lesson and then they work with their partner to complete the “homework” page from our curriculum. Once they are finished, 2 groups at a time can go to my copy and grade their work. .
They get to see how they did and can see my work as well. Checking their own work and correcting it is so beneficial! .
These are practice sheets, not tests. So there is no problem if a kid uses a pencil to change their answers instead of using a marker. Either way they are seeing the errors and fixing them.
After they finish checking their work, they get to go do activities on Zearn that directly match the lesson we did that day! .
This picture of our Story Sticks in the My First School Curriculum The Very Hungry Caterpillar unit always makes me happy. I am finishing up the Dear Zoo unit over the next couple days and I’m excited to have Story Sticks back for the Dear Zoo unit as well! 📷: @little.miss.kaye

This morning I got up at 4:45, drank some pre workout, worked out 💪🏼, got ready, packed my lunch, and THEN got the call that we weren’t having school. 🙌🏼
Now I’m drinking coffee, sitting with my cat, and thinking about what I want to do today. 👍🏼
Stay safe today! 🙌🏼

I am LOVING typing my plans in my happy planner from @succulent.in.second ‘s tpt template!! It makes my planner look so organized and I can fit way more in the squares then when I just write in it. I’ve been using this all year and Im obsessed! 🤩
Gibt mal wieder was zum mitmachen 😊🤩 mit sogar einem kleinen Preis 🏆

DIY Snowman Stacker! ⛄
I saw this idea on @momducator page, and just had to make it for our Snowman Unit!
I just painted 3 mini terra cotta pots to look like the different parts of a snowman. My 21 month old had a lot of fun with this. The bigger kiddos thought it was cool and played with it a little bit too. 😊
Here's to a 3 day weekend! 👏🏼😴💃🏼🙌🏼 What are everyone's plans for the extra day off?

Easy-cheesy-lemon-squeezy tip for independent writing and writing centers! Do you have kiddos who, if left to choose, would draw their picture for work on writing time ALL day if they could?! 😂🤪
Place sand timers in your writing center. I start with 5 min timers and move down to 3 min. Students have that long to draw their picture before they have to start writing their words down. (Of course they can go back to add to their picture and then write more about it, too!) It’s a simple fix that helps keep kids accountable for their time management and ensures they are working the entire time. Check out today’s insta story video for more info! 😘 Do you use sand timers in your writing center? These 5 minute sand timers shown in the picture are linked in my profile.
Super belated post of our middle school challenge before the holiday break. May I present to you “The Great Gingerbread Architecture Challenge”. Students had to work in groups to come up with a plan, budget and “buy” materials to build the best structure. Judges from Gingerbreadingham came and judged each structure on a variety of criteria. Complete with badges and clipboards because I like to be as annoying as possible. These are just a few examples of the awesome structures built! #middleschool#arted#arteducation#architecture#iteachart#iteachtoo#tmsartists#iwaspretendingtobemaryberry
Relationships must come FIRST! We all know this, but this year I have noticed it more than ever. These are a few things I have done this year to build relationships with my students.
1- I had a student come in with a behavior plan, we came up with a plan and I was really nervous, but you know what!? He has had such an amazing year. He went up 2 levels on his district benchmark testing and mom has cried several times because of his great year he’s having. We haven’t had to implement anything on his BIP! And I swear it’s all because I took interest in his love of basketball!
2- I have a student who can get really unfocused and act silly...to the point he needs to leave the room. Well, I learned his parents are into Essential Oils, so am I, so he has a roller blend I keep at my desk with mine. Every morning at 8:30 the two of us take time to apply our oils and talk about how we’re going to have a great day! It has made a HUGE difference!
3- another student has been having a rough few weeks, so I took interest in her love of horseback riding and this week I went to watch her ride. She was excited, mom was excited, and we are hopeful it will help her going forward.
None of these things take much time or money. They are simple, and because I take the few minutes to truly KNOW my students, they want to come to school, they want to learn, and they want to do well!
How do you build relationships with your students?
These are a few of my faaaaaavorite things...especially when it comes to reading! 😉📚📖

Spent some quality time with these fifth graders of mine this week on a field trip to @ideamuseummesa to learn all about space and space-related art. I love that it ties on directly with our standards, but it was amazing to hear the deep and thoughtful questions my students were asking or guide! #fieldtrip#teachersofinsta#makelearningfun

My favorite spot every morning☕️ Especially when we have a 2 hour delay 🙌🏼
I absolutely love @sweatpantsandcoffee !! She is my spirit animal. And I don’t wanna today because I do not feel good but it’s not worth the planning. I’ll just suffer through it. I have last period off so I will be heading home to start this three day weekend early!!! And by early I mean with copious amounts of NyQuil. #ihatebeingsick#drinkallthecoffee#coffeelove#coffee

Nothing changes if NOTHING CHANGES. Heard that on a call last night and was like “so freaking true”🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻.
Traded in my Captain Crunch & donuts for this deliciousness😍....that’s quite the change but I don’t feel that sugar crash, or even the cravings at this point, and we’re only 5 days in...it just takes a little bit of will power those first few days to power through. Trust me, it’s worth it. And YOU CAN do it too, girlfriend. I believe in YOU.💕
Anyone else ready to put this week behind us!?! 🙋🏻♀️🙋🏻♀️🙋🏻♀️ This weekend - with an incoming snowstorm or two - this girl isn’t leaving the house. I’ve got my favorite color of flair pen ready and my projects and ideas to share with you all organized and prioritized!! Anything you hope is on the TOP of my list!? Let me know in the comments!

Peer observations, awards assembly, & lunch in the classroom... TGIF 🙌❤️🤪
Do you take time to take care of yourself, or do you try to take care of everyone else around you?
Find something that makes you feel good. Whether that is a work out, taking a walk, cooking a new recipe, reading a book, getting your nails done or having dinner with friends.
Remember you cannot pour into others if your cup is empty. Find something to fill your cup & then go do it. I promise, it will make it easier to do other things if you feel better. Happy Friday Friends!
Book Box Day! @scholasticbookclubs This whole box is full of books that are going into my classroom library 📚. 1️⃣ I Survived-My students are obsessed with these books this year! I didn’t have any of them in my classroom, so I made sure to get some this month! I love finding a book series that they get really into reading! 2️⃣ Obviously MLK Jr Day is coming up, as is Black History Month! However, I have made it a personal goal the last few years to add more books into my library that have characters (fiction and nonfiction) from different races, cultures, and home lives the WHOLE year. These will be great additions to my classroom! 3️⃣ Early Readers-I always like finding interesting books for my beginning readers. They love Mo Willems and Who Would Win is a big hit too. 4️⃣ Have you heard of Scholastic’s “Acorn” Series? I have purchased some of their “Branches” series books which are beginner chapter books but acorn books are for even younger readers. They are setup like graphic novels and include simpler sentences. These will be great for first graders! #bookboxday#scholasticbookclub#scholasticbooks#teachersofinstagram#teachersofinsta#teachersofig#iteachtoo#iteachfirst#classroomlibrary#teachersfollowteachers

We’re predicted to have a huge snow storm hit Northern Ohio this weekend and I’ll be right in the middle of it at a tournament...let the fun begin. 😐Have a great weekend everyone!
The person I try to be for my students is him.
I will never be enough, I will never be the best, I will never be as amazing as he is.
The one thing I will always be is their fearless and tenacious leader.
Some days are hard, some days are amazing, some students need extra love and some students need love from afar.
I will never give up on any of them.
❤️ Tomorrow I will be wearing #redfored because for one, ❤️ the proposed class sizes are insane. LAUSD students and teachers deserve better. ❤️ By the way, as a Southern California teacher I already have 29 first graders and can go up to 32 as more kids enroll. Last year I had 32 first graders. That was 8 guided reading groups and meeting kids' needs was hard. ❤️ My heart is with the teachers of LAUSD. ❤️There is so much wrong with our school systems here in California and nationwide, but change is possible!!!!!!!!!!!!! My district is not part of the strike, but we will be wearing red to show our support.❤️

🤣Am I right?!!! Double tap if you feel the same!⠀
Quote by Rick Smith
Another day that teachers in LA are on strike to fight for better funding, smaller class sizes, more support staff, better wages, and more. Another day they are not in their classrooms, where they WANT to be. Instead, they’re outside in the rain, fighting for their students. That’s where they NEED to be. It brings back too many memories of the walkout here in Arizona. It’s so hard making the decision to leave our students, but the temporary absence is necessary because the fight is FOR them. It’s always for them. It’s sad that teachers across the country are finding themselves in this situation. But if no one else will do what’s best for students, you better bet that their teachers will. I’m rooting for all the teachers in LA right now! KEEP ON KEEPIN ON ✊🏼 #IsupportLAUSD#RedForEd#ULTAstrong
