Catherine de’ Medici (1519 -1589), daughter of Lorenzo II de’ Medici, was Italy’s first fashion ambassador. As queen of France via her marriage to King Henry II (1547-1559), she favored the elaborate dresses, fabrics and shoes of her home country. She was considered to be amongst the most fashionable women in Europe.
