Butterfly Bunch Day 1! - So we came out of our room to find that all of our new friends had emerged! They are beautiful and strong showing colors of red, oranges and yellows. We gave them some of their favorite foods, oranges and watermelon and they have been gobbling it up, with their long curly tongues, getting ready to fly on their own. Following Chris's fall last week we see that his wings have come out a bit bent but he is still in good spirits and we read that he should be fine. Corey is huge in his jar as you can see and has now rejoined the crew to eat and get ready for release in a few days. It's been a wild journey seeing them grow and transform and it has been awesome being a part of helping nature get some of it's natural beauty. Stay tuned to see their release soon and thanks for joining us on this journey!
Drama on Caterpillar Island!! Caterpillar Crew Day 8 - So the crew climbed to the ceiling the other day and shed their skin to form their chrysalis (cocoon) but, bad boy Corey, was late to the party and didnt like how close Cassie was cocooned to Chris and started causing trouble all through the house! He eventually knocked Chris completely off and started trying to fight Colin so the producers (Mommy and Daddy) had to intervene and get him his own jar where he eventually cocooned by himself. Chris also had to be removed and placed on a soft paper towel in the final habitat to complete his #transformation. Send your #support for Chris's recovery. Thank you @insectlore for a glimpse into nature's drama and instructions on how to keep our crew healthy and happy! Stay tuned to see the final stage soon! 🐛
It’s time to press pause! During cold winter months, praying #mantis eggs enter a state known as “diapause” when they slow down their own development to wait for warmer temperatures. This allows the baby praying mantises inside to relax and stay cozy while dangerous weather rages on outside!
Found this Gum Snout Moth on my car, put it in a safer spot before I drove off

Part 2 #butterflies
I awoke on the morning of the 16th day to a crunching sound and I looked in and I was just being stared at, like, 'oi, gimme some food'. So i made some sugar water and the butterfly couldnt wait to get on my hand and come out to play.
He had some of the sugar water and was off up my arm, my face, the world was his playground.
5 minutes later the 2nd came along. I fed him too and he was the same.
It made me laugh that the lego butterfly figure is holding flowers and the first born was straight up on them, no messing, and just stayed there.
Within the hour they were all born and it maybe took about an hour for their wings to dry. The blood that came out of the cocoon stained my hands. Took 3 washes to get it off.
I gave them some fruit and left them to it.
Later that day, they'd really found their wings and were flying everywhere. I got them some flowers and once they smelt those they calmed right down and I managed to get a pic of all 4.
On the 18th day we took them into the countryside and released them.
I saw one half hour later munching on the flower of a thistle #thistledonicely#paintedladybutterfly

Part 1 #caterpillar 🐛
I'm gonna have to do this in 2 halves. Because I don't think it's possible to sum up a life cycle in just 10 pics/vids.
So i got bought some caterpillars as a present from this company on Amazon. The idea was to do this with the kids but they're teenagers now, so I've ended up doing it all, mostly. And it's been ace, well interesting for the last 18 days #lowmaintenancepet
The post arrives and you start off with these tiny little bugs in what looks like coffee/peanut butter.
Then you watch them chobble their way all through the food in the pot.
Everytime you look at them they're bigger.
On about day 8, one made his way all the way through the centre of the pot, munching the whole middle, in like, an hour, literally parting the food either side of him. Naturally he got nicknamed Moses #hungryhungrycaterpillar
Theyve been fascinating and I even had them watching England in the world cup 😂 👌
When they're full, and fat, the caterpillars climb to the top and curl into an L shape and turn to chrysalides.
Day 12. When they've chrysalised, and have been a few days, this is where I had to move them to their chrysalis station. So when they're butterflies, they're in the butterfly garden and safe, till I release them.
Their natural movement (as a chrysalide) whilst asleep is to shake, to deter something eating them. Gotta be honest if I was a bird I wouldn't want to eat that jolty mess. Such is natural selection, very clever.
It was creepy, but i dunno if I was more worried they were gonna hurt themselves. It was so violent.
Then, I left them to it, they just didn't move at all for 4 days. I thought the heat had had them tbh :( But on the 4th of the chrysalide days and day 16 overall, luckily I was about...and, I shall continue in part 2...
Our caterpillar exploratory shelf is up and running ready for the Hummingbirds to discover tomorrow 🐛
We are in full swing with our life cycles over here at the moment. We are seeing tiny changes in our tadpoles and are checking them everyday excited for when they get their back legs 🐸
Our veggies are also growing well. We have corn, pumpkins, courgette, tomatoes, cucumbers, beets, carrots, pots and onions all on the go as well as tasty strawberries and edible flowers yum 🌽
This weekend we have been making sure we stay wild by visiting a country park yesterday, meeting a family of geese, and spotting dragonflies and other wildlife. Today we have been potting out some of our veggie seedlings 🌱 #shelfie#brillbutterflies
