Celina Alvarez started advocating for the homeless over 20 years ago as a frontline worker and is the executive director of Housing Works. She was first introduced to nonprofit work in 1993 during the peak of the AIDS epidemic. And later shifted her interests after meeting Mollie Lowery at LAMP Community in Skid Row who taught her about the value of harm reduction and housing first principles.
Her passion is to walk alongside those who are striving to regain control of their own lives--one person, one life, one relationship at a time.

"For residents like Samantha Foot, Hearthstone has meant a huge shift in her life. "I didn't want to believe it until I actually walked in the door," recalled Foot. She went from sleeping on the street and taking a spot in an emergency shelter to having her own home at Hearthstone. "To feel like a regular human being. Not looked down upon as a homeless person," said Foot. "It was important to me to build myself back up that way. "Now she's back in the workforce having secured a job as a grocery store cashier. "Sam is one of our success stories," said Dani Moretto [JHS Director]. We are so proud of her, and everything she's overcome to get where she is today."
What’s the secret sauce? What makes you different? What makes you face your fears? My answer: door knocking! It’s what works, it’s what creates meaningful relationships and it puts me outside of my comfort zone! Not everyone wants to talk to me, but I know there’s SOMEONE out there waiting for me to help them!

5 years ago, when I drove past panhandlers in Hollywood, I would think to myself “go get a job” and dismiss them.
At the time, I was working on a film on Bonsais and one of the characters I interviewed was a Buddhist teacher called George Haas. As we’re having a cup of coffee, a man approaches us asking for money and, without hesitation, I say “leave us alone”. Meanwhile, to my surprise, George pulls out a dollar bill and hands it to him. “Who am I to judge someone who’s begging?” he says. As his words made me reexamine my thoughts, I noticed something odd about the dollar bill. On it were the words Love people and feed them.
George uses these bills to teach compassion to his students. Little did he know, he sparked a huge shift in me. Not much came of the Bonsai movie. Instead, I produced and directed The Advocates, a documentary on the homeless issue in Los Angeles.
In a series of free screenings and Q&As after the film In partnership with the Everyone In campaign we are opening the door to meaningful conversations about homelessness. The next one is organized in partnership with the city of West Hollywood on Wed. August 28th at 6pm at the City Hall Council Chamber and the evening is moderated by award winning journalist Val Zavala. @cl9udia@rudysalinas0207@wehochamber@abc7la@advocatesfilm@everyonein_la@laoncloud9@mel_till@metagrouporg@georgehaas#advocatesfilm#endhomelessness#hope#documentary#affordablehousing , #losangeles#bedsnotsidewalks#homelessinla#supportivehousing#lacounty#housingfirst#socialissues#social justice #filmindependant#stvincentdepaul
HOUSING FIRST is a passion that has been transformed into a mission. An affordable home centred mission. A business-driven, value -focused housing model whose aim is to be a significant facilitator in delivery of smart, functional, and comfort driven housing for various categories of prospective home owners.
“A lot of people are at peace, believe it or not. A lot of people are homeless out here because they want to be. They don't want a house, they don't want an apartment, they wanna live out here on the street. They enjoy it. It's free, it's not a part of society. A lot of people mad with the government. They don't want to be a part of it. So they make a choice. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
“Believe me, a lot of people out here got money. You look around, they looking raggedy as a mother fucker, and they've got thousands in the bank. Motha fuckas that got money ain't no different from motha fuckas that don't got any. You know, the choices that you make, man, the shit that you've been through.” ~ Mario
In an effort to bring new models of density to housing in Los Angeles, our Canyon Drive project examines the small lot subdivision. The unique wedge-shaped design brings creativity and inventiveness to this housing typology.
