Work in progress...this evening we celebrate the opening of the 11th Red Kite A-Level arts exhibition. Judging takes place this morning and there are so many exceptional pieces. In fact, so many that for the first year we struggled for wall space here in the Courtyard. As an education charity, this is a highlight of our education programme each year, with schools and their students from across Leeds taking part. #art#exhibition#education#learning#teach#historichouse#stories
This nearly 6,000 square foot brick and timber Tudor Revival in Texas’ affluent University Park has all the details and architectural elements to make you think it was built in the 1920s. Architect Larry Boerder is responsible for the classic design which was brought to realization by builder George Lewis. It's on the market for $3.1M.
Our little pet cemetery ❤️🐾🥀 We couldn’t bring ourselves to bury pets at our old house because we knew we wouldn’t stay. We had them cremated and waited until we found our forever home. Here we were able to finally make a place for them that feels permanent and right. Besides...what’s a #victorian house without a pet cemetery?

AMP Heritage Cottage : Heritage Project : A restoration of the the historic Truganini House to its former glory, built in 1800’s.
Graphite completed the re-pointing of the entire sandstone façade and installation of new boundary fencing to blend in with the main building. In addition, the restoration required the complete replacement of the existing straight and curved roofing and eaves, termite damaged timber flooring and substructure. The re-building, rendering and painting of the severely damaged veranda structural wall and stairs completed this unique heritage make-good.
Drumroll, please... 😁🥁🥁🥁
We decided on floor plan 3!
We chose the plan because it keeps the oldest parts of the home completely intact with only the most minimal changes, while at the same time also being the most cost efficient.
Number 3 removes everything the last owners did, taking the home back to as close to its original state as we can. It also keeps the 1900 addition, which, while kind of a random add-on, has the sweetest feeling to it 💗
And because the new family room and master and bedrooms are at the back of the house, we can build that area for what it costs to build new construction from scratch ($$) instead of what it costs to renovate historic construction ($$$$).
The gray square beside the powder room will be the laundry and pantry...details TBD.
And lest you think the kitchen will be unbearably small, the 1900 addition is 15’x22’, so it’s a decent size for kitchen adventures 👩🏻🍳 Thanks for all your comments - I love reading them!! #historichomes#historichouses#historichome#historichouse#floorplan#redesign#renovate#virginia#19thcentury#countryliving#oldhouse#oldhomes#oldhouselove#restoration

This fancy little house went on the market recently and I had to go check it out for myself because it used to be a library! It was built in 1925 for a local family who donated it to the town of Stockton Springs to be used as a public library, but the town ultimately turned down the offer due to financial hardships at the time. The interior is pretty much a blank slate at this point, but look at that exterior 😍 Search for 678 US Route 1 in Stockton Springs to see photos from the listing. And you should definitely absolutely put in an offer because it’s only 📣 $119k 📣
This staircase has a story — when we first bought the Victorian the newel post was missing, along with several of the quarter sawn oak spindles. After the fire, the stair treads and some of the spindles and handrail were charred. We were able to save the stair treads by flipping them over and re-installing them. We hired a local craftsperson to replicate some of the damaged spindles, and portions of the handrail that were too badly damaged to salvage. And we found this quarter sawn oak newel post at a salvage yard in SLC to finish off the project! #historichouse#historichome#victorian#victorianhouse#balustrade#newelpost#historicpreservation#staircase#diy#fixerupper#quartersawnoak

Repairs have temporarily disguised this Victorian greenhouse as a Modernist structure like those designed by Pearce, Pendreigh and Johnson at Edinburgh Botanical Gardens. It’s reminds me of our display greenhouse by the same designers and that it’s about time I had another visit to Kew Gardens to see ‘The Hive’ by Wolfgang Buttress!
