People Are Not Happy That The Serena Williams GQ Cover Has "Woman" In Quotes in one of its annual “Men of the Year” covers. Williams' cover was customized by designer Virgil Abloh. On it, he crossed out the word "men" and wrote "WOMAN" above it in quotation marks.
People have responded that the Virgil crossing-out of “Men” is acceptable but there was no need to put woman in quotation marks. However, Williams has previously been mocked for her appearance and deliberately misgendered. Let us know what you think in the comments below...
Tbh, it’s incredibly disappointing that a world-class magazine like @gq didn’t stop to think that putting ironic quotes around “logo” is verrrryyyy different from putting them around “woman”... especially when that woman’s femininity has constantly been put into question. 😒
But, we wanna hear from our GISTers. What do you think about this controversial cover?! 🎾 #thegist
#GQmagazine courted #backlash this week for the way it featured #tennis great #SerenaWilliams in its Men of the Year cover story package. The #controversy began soon after the outlet tweeted cover shots of her, as well as fellow 2018 honorees #HenryGolding (“Crazy Rich Asians”), #MichaelBJordan (“Black Panther”) and #JonahHill (“Mid90s”). Unlike the three male-identified stars’ covers, Williams’ featured the word “MEN” crossed out, with “WOMAN” written above it—in quotations. The New York Times and other #mediaoutlets reported that critics swiftly called the magazine out for playing into the frequent #racist, #sexist and #transphobic attacks that Williams has endured throughout her #career. GQ’s only response came from research manager #MickRouse, who tweeted that #LouisVuitton artistic director #VirgilAbloh worked on the cover and used the quotation marks in tandem with his design #signature. Emily was awarded GQ's International Woman of the Year 💪❤ "I think Woman of the Year is a pretty crazy title. But what I think about what's important in 2018 for both men and women, it's about defying stereotypes. It's about being multi-faceted. It's about wearing a string bikini on the beach, and at a protest. I don't think that any of us have to limit ourselves into a box, or the perception that anyone tries to force on you. Hopefully men and women across Australia will take that to heart"- Emily Ratajkowski 😘😍
