TIP No2 NOTES ON TONE
Janet Wood SBA: “To express a plant’s three-dimensional form on paper, use at least three tones: dark, medium and light. Good lighting is essential for this, from the left if you are right-handed or from the right if lefthanded. The middle tone area between the two is where you will see the true colour of a subject. Always aim for a smooth graduation of tone from light to dark. “Before applying the first wash, study your subject and note the strongest highlights. Take care on the light areas not to overwork veins or surface pattern. To check if darker areas could be improved, place tracing paper over the work and use a pencil to test the effect of intensifying the tone. Even a small area of very dark tone can increase the subject’s depth and make it more lifelike.”
More tips on building a successful tonal range in your painting:
▪️The range of tones that can be produced with different colors varies: lighter hues (such as yellows) will produce a smaller range of tones than darker ones (such as blacks).
▪️To understand better tone and value, paint a gray scale. This has white of paper at the one end, black at the other, and a range of tones in between. You can do the same with the other colors by gradually adding a little more water to the color each time. Or to paint with glazes, creating a series of values by painting a series of blocks, each glazed over once more than the previous block.⬇️

will be doing more of gouache this week! sketching too is on my list.
Gouache painting from yesterday’s traditional art stream! I think I enjoyed this the most of all the gouache paintings I’ve done so far. The first hour had some moments of panic but after that it just fun and the colors made me feel so happy the whole time I worked on it! 😊 #twitch#gouache#gouachepainting#gouacheillustration#landscape
So many cute couples to paint! I really do enjoy portraits because it brings so much joy to the people in them and becomes a treasured memory. And I love knowing that my work is framed and displayed in homes all around the world! 💐✨🍭🌟 #framedprint#homedecor#coupleportrait
