One year ago today, I started this IG by sharing a photo of myself in a camping store with an oversized backpack strapped to my shoulders.
“I’m gonna do it!” I electronically shouted into the void— and I really do mean void... My mom downloaded Instagram to follow me, my girl @savnorthwest shared my username on her stories, and I hoped that people would want to read what I decided to write about traveling— even though I was months away from actually getting on a plane.
In the 365 days since then, I have been to 20 new countries. I have made incredible friends in all of them, and I have learned more about myself than I could have imagined.
I am strong, independent, resourceful, encouraging, and brave. I am adventurous and cautious— both in fair doses. I am enthusiastic and mellow. AND I am allowed to be somewhere in the middle of these extremes, or to embrace my wildness in its entirety. But I have learned that most of all— I’m a decision maker. And along the way, a thousand of you have decided to care about my thoughts enough to click “follow.” How stinkin’ cool.
Today I sold 2/3 of my belongings and moved into my boyfriends apartment. In a couple months, we’re relocating to Brooklyn, New York. Never in a million years, did I think that this magical life could be mine. But it is. It really really is. And I am bursting with gratitude in ways I cannot fully express.
I love you all so much. Thank you for an amazing first year as Britton Abroad! I’ll never forget it.
Doing my best to build bridges [not walls] in my little corner of the planet everyday, but this idea is particularly fitting as we honor Dr. MLK and reflect on the current state of our nation. #promotelove •
Bridges serve the purpose of connecting people... and I think the idea of building bridges, thus building connections, is why I love traveling so much. At the end of every journey exploring somewhere new, after immersing myself in a culture different from my own, I come home feeling more connected, more tolerant, more whole, and more like a citizen of the world, not of any particular place. So, I guess what I’m trying to say is - take time to connect with others both at home and abroad, because the more we connect with others, the more we understand each other, and the more we’re able to make the world an overall better place. #lovenothate#travelmore#travellifestyle
