Setting up the room for my first gear shoot. We did it in one take, it is completely unedited but I think we’ll go with it and get on that train of progress over perfection! T-minus 3 days to Springer Mountain ⛺️
You have probably seen 100 of these. Truthfully at first i didn't want to be another one of the 100's you've seen. One thing led to another and I made my first "flat lay". What I learned is that the format is not original but what goes inside of it is. The substance. The content. All of these are things that I use on a daily basis. It's cool to see how others use their things to create what they do. So here is mine. Also a "what's in my camera bag video to come!
Last week you saw Kaleigh show everything she is taking with her on the Appalachian Trail. Her approach to gear was "what will make me most comfortable on the trail without weighing too much"? For Tuananh it is more about what is necessary with a luxury item mixed in. Of course being lightweight is also a plus, as Tuan Anh's pack is a few pounds lighter than K's! 🏕
This is just a preview, of course, if you want to see everything that Tuananh fits into his pack, all in a lightweight base weight range, then head to the link in our bio! Let's take a look at some highlights from Tuananhs gear list, and see how he chooses his gear!
When it comes to choosing the gear, Tuan Anh did a lot of research into the specifics of each piece. He looked at things like space, material, durability, weight and the overall price for what we would be paying for (also the warmth rating for our sleeping bags). For example, when choosing the tent he made sure that the material was lightweight and lasting. He also made sure that there would be enough room inside for both of us AND our gear to lay at our feet. ...
You can find lightweight gear that is cheap, and you can also find durable gear that is cheap. But to find gear that is both lightweight and durable, - we came to the realization that we would have to spend a good bit of cash. That is why we chose to splurge on our packs, sleeping bags, and tent in order to ensure that they be light, comfortable and keep us warm and protected from the elements.
You will notice in the video that Tuan Anh is carrying our entire tent in his pack. With our old tent, I would carry the poles and footprint, and he would carry the rest. However, with our new tent, it is so light that he can carry everything and it is still lighter than the bits he carried before (plus his pack is also lighter than mine - even with the whole tent). ...
Check the link in our bio to watch Tuan Anh's whole pack video! And let us know if you have any questions. ⬇️

The art of packing for an expedition. Pictured here: enough to get @loury_explorer through 50 days among the mountains and glacial landscapes of Iceland. He’s carrying one pulk for survival, and one for picking up other people’s rubbish he finds en route. As for food? He’s relying on our fully compostable packaging. #fuelledbyfirepot
Here is everything I’m going to carry for 4.5 months! Everything weighs about 7.5 pounds and I’m really happy with my balance between comfort and ultralight. I have slowly accumulated gear I love and can’t wait to put it to the ultimate test on the AT. If you have any questions let me know. #ultralightbackpacking
