Throughout my apprenticeship with flowers I have aimed not to have a style and failed by acquiring one. I’m not sure why precisely I didn’t want one—perhaps I have no interest in being a brand or the idea of style felt like a cage. So I’ve tried to borrow styles and adapt them to the flowers I have on hand. In retrospect, I think this is a sensible process for the neophyte: study, copy, flounder, and by necessity, invent. Having access to new blooms helps with innovation, like new colors in a paintbox or new shapes to puzzle with, they can challenge you to see differently. A change of scene also scrapes away old habits. .
People do change styles: Monet moved towards abstraction over time and Van Gogh towards bold colors. But if those two are any example, it takes immense amounts of work: Monet produced about 2500 paintings and Van Gogh in his short life as an artist (he began painting in his twenties and took his life at 37), produced about 2000 works of art. Picasso shifted styles a number of times and left over 50,000 sketches, drawings, sculptures and paintings to prove it.
To borrow from the writer Howard Jacobson, in the hot pursuit of style we should set out to discover rather than assert; we should go places we never expected to go, and get lost along the way. Art must constantly “test its flights of abstraction against…obstinate materiality.” At the altar of style, thankfully flowers will always push us humbly down to earth. .
Bookish my friends! (Guess you can tell what I’m doing all day...where’s the navel-gazing emoji?)
An arrangement from September I didn’t think worthy of the feed. Consider the December bar a lower one! .
The showy dahlia here is ‘Dark Butterfly’. My first year growing Nicandra and will be sowing it earlier in 2019.
