For extraordinary heroism in military operations against an armed enemy of the United States as Pilot of a P-38 aircraft in the 96th Fighter Squadron, 82d Fighter Group, TWELFTH Air Force, in the North African Theater of Operations on 5 July 1943. On that date, Colonel Sloan led a flight of fighter aircraft escorting thirty-six B-25 bombers in an attack on Gerbini Airdrome. The formation encountered intense anti-aircraft fire in the target area and was attacked by ten enemy fighters. Colonel Sloan shot down two of the enemy fighters and was conspicuous in driving the remaining hostile fighters away from the bombers, all of which returned safely.
Last few days has seen the flag completed, the moon's surface added, and while I had my reds out, the commander's stripes on the sleeves. Just noticed that I also need to add a small swipe of red on top of his helmet. 🤔
The suit has been thinly washed with lit and shadow whites. After I let all this dry thoroughly, I'll come back in with the suit's sunlit whites very opaquely and thick. The areas of the suit in shadow will be delicately modeled to 'suggest' white in shadow.
One of the advantages of my detailed tonal underpainting is that I can use those dark brownish values as an accurate value foundation - and not all of the underpainting will be covered in the end. The resulting 'depth' effect, among other subtle features only seen in hand-rendered artwork, is best seen in person, which is why even in this virtual and digital age we old-school painters still bother to publicly exhibit our works!
