This has been all over but we tweaked to our class! The kids loved coming in and seeing why we are thankful for them. One of them asked us why we did it, and we said why not? We love you guys and want to show you! ❤️ for #fifthgrade we followed this up with letters of gratitude to someone in the building. So many students reached out to teacher aides or bus drivers and my coteacher and I were so happy to see them really think about who has impacted them!
Who needs windows when you can have anchor charts instead? 🤷🏼♀️ Teacher tip: If you run out of wall space, clip your anchor charts to your blinds. Anyone else do this? 😂
P.S. I love teaching my kids how to analyze different sources. It’s such an important life-skill. We’ve been having fun reading primary sources from the American Revolution and trying to figure out what they’re saying in words that we can understand. The more we learn, the easier it becomes. My favorite translation from today: “I know not what course others may take; but as for me, give me liberty or give me death!” -Patrick Henry, 1775 ➡️ “I don’t know about you guys, but I’d rather live free or die trying!” -5th grader, 2018 👏🏼 #madeinfifthgrade

Transformation Tuesday hits hard
It’s very hard for me to look back at such a truthful photo of myself. I don’t even recognize that girl on the left. This was from 2012-2013 time frame. A time where I turned to fast food, alcohol, and partying.
It brings me to tears to see where I’ve been in the past. This is not a transformation that focuses solely on my current lifestyle. It is a transformation that shows just how far I’ve come over the last 5 years.
My current lifestyle change started because of a medical reason. Don’t like that be your why for your lifestyle change.
I’ve tried countless diets in the past. But that’s one of the biggest reasons I’ve never found something that works for me. This isn’t about a diet. This is ALL about a lifestyle change. Learning how to fuel your body with the nutrition it needs and still enjoying foods you like. It’s about moderation and learning how to have a healthy relationship with food.
While this photo focuses on the physical transformation... there’s so much more than just a physical changes. The mental mindset switch that happens after focusing on living a healthier lifestyle is indescribable.
I am more than thankful this holiday season that I’ve found my way to a happier and healthier me.
For our first novel study, my students had to pick 1 of 4 different options for projects they could do. The majority of my class chose to do a PowerPoint. A couple others chose to do book boxes that represent scenes, and I even had 2 boys put together a play. They did sooo good!! I'm so proud of my class this year! #Hatchet#NovelStudy#iteach5th#fifthgradeteacher
Another snow day makes today the official start of my Turkey Day break! You know you LOVE your job when you're a little bummed about it since you had some fun Thanksgiving activities planned for your kids and some notes ready to go home with them letting them know just how thankful you are for them 💛🧡
I’m a big perfectionist when it comes to creating things but I’ve learned to step back more to let my kiddos take more ownership.👍🏽 It’s not always easy bc like I said perfectionist here ➡️🤷🏻♀️ but I’ve come to learn that I love their work even more bc it’s perfect in its own way.😭❤️ We have a bulletin board outside our classroom that rotates between the three 5th grade classes. This month was our turn and I was sooo excited.☺️ I came up with the idea (again I’m slowly learning to step back lol) and they helped me execute it.🙌🏽 They created that awesome globe with absolutely NO HELP from me!🌎 I just showed them the graphic with the water color globe and the quote. Then another group worked together to brainstorm and translate a list of words that described them💭. Then another group chose and put up the bulletin paper and border.🤔 I ended up stapling up the final pieces myself for sake of time but I felt so happy and proud to see their work up!😢 Seeing them take ownership and best of all WORK TOGETHER was the best thing ever.😩 Much more meaningful than if I had done it myself😭👏🏽

Do you ever casually plant a seed and then it takes off like wildfire? Also do you mix metaphors or is that just me? Anywho, last week this teacher had reached her limit of brainless games during inside recess (rained lots of days in a row🙀) and I decided to show my students @duolingo. I was pumped some of them knew about it. The kids already have Spanish as a special but I wanted to challenge my Spanish-speakers especially to learn another language. Well a few kids checked it out during recess that day. And then it caught on even more during Fun Friday🙌🏻. A student said “I wish there was a time we could practice everyday.” I said, “There is! We can do it for morning work!” And we are! I love how most of them are even writing down the words to study them. We decided when I say “Class, class” they can respond with “yes, yes” in their language. I shouldn’t have told my class I already know some Spanish😂. I told them that I keep getting emails reminding me to practice German (I used that as an example) and they said I should really learn it. I told them about my Social Media Master Class and how my teacher @1alexkhan is German and he learned English so it’s only fair I start learning some German. It’s way more challenging than Spanish!!! Now I know why kindergarten is called what it is lol. #thesocialstudieswhisperer#fifthgradeteacher#culturaldiversity#languages#duolingo#iteachtoo#morningwork#multilingual#multilingualkids#asheville#ashevillenc#iteachtoo#teachersofinstagram#teacher#teachersfollowteachers
Today we were focusing on going back into the text and being “reading detectives”. What does every detective have??? A magnifying glass! When the students got up to share their “evidence” they got to use the magnifying glass to share. We all had so much fun with it!!
Dogs make everything better! 😍💕
Swipe to check out this cutie my brother brought home last night!
My parents will have their hands full this weekend with Max and my brothers new puppy. 😍
Any name suggestions for this handsome guy?!
Thanksgiving Break is just around the corner, so students practiced their budgeting skills today as they reviewed decimals. They had to help a family plan their budget before getting their groceries to make a Thanksgiving dinner. Students got to color their desk, and we listened to some jazz music perfect for the holidays as we worked. It’s always fun to hear their remarks on how much the meal ends up costing. Thank you to @terrysteachingtidbits for such a great resource!
Such a sweet Thanksgiving gift from a student and their parent! Working Title I isn’t easy, that’s for sure, but I would NEVER work anywhere else. I want to be where I’m needed most, where kids can look at me and say “he can relate. He comes from the same background or he’s been through the same stuff. He looks like me. He talks like me. He sees the inner me and not the outside. He gets me.” #iteachtoo#dudeswhoteach#fifthgradeteacher
If it doesn’t involve emojis & cheesy teacher puns, count me out. 😎😂
👀Here’s a sneak peek at one little part of my classroom. I’m SO excited to use this bulletin board to help my kiddos with their accountable talk in their writing & during discussions. You best not be raising your hand & starting a sentence with, “Uh, ‘cause...” because you can bet yo’self that I will be sending you to this bulletin board to GET👏🏼IT👏🏼TOGETHER👏🏼 There will be no sentences starting with “because.” NOT UP IN HERE, kids, not up in here. Middle school prep bootcamp starts September 4th 👊🏼💪🏼✏️📖 Make sure to stay tuned in to @madeinfifthgrade to see all things 5th Grade ELA 🤩 #iteachreading#iteachwriting#accountabletalk#classroomsetup#madeinfifthgrade
