Phot by @chrisburkard. The pilot told us that this volcano was the most dangerous to fly over as its constant plume of volcanic ash is discretely released into the atmosphere (often with no warning) mixing with clouds & damaging the planes sensors & electronics. Due to its remoteness it is nearly impossible to survey & most observations are done by satellite. We did our best to accurately describe the cone, ash plume & if anything seemed irregular to ground control during our flight. With as many as 22 accounted for eruptions in the last 200 years it can be unnerving to fly around & overtop an active volcano like Mt Cleveland.
If you told me a week ago what I’d be doing today I would have said NAH NAH NAH. End of October & I got to surf with seals & go home with a sunburn. Life is sweet!

Photograph by @paulnicklen while on assignment for @natgeo in Hawaii. @cristinamittermeier dives under a large crashing wave in #Makaha, Oahu, Hawaii. The Hawaiians of Makaha took us under their wings and taught us about their deep connection to the sea. We were debutants and we found ourselves in situations that we would never have thought possible prior to their guidance. Brian Keaulana was teaching us about three and four wave hold downs just prior to this big surf day. We were taught to stay near the bottom, avoiding the foamy white water until we could see solid water before swimming to the surface. After experiencing this, I now have so much respect for big wave surfers. #gratitude#hawaii#freediving#surf#surfing#gratitude#aloha
Lanai is a very unique Island in comparison to the others.
We first landed at what had to be one of the smallest airports I've ever been to then we drove down what seemed like one of the only roads on the island through the only town which consists of one gas station and one supermarket. We then proceeded down the pine tree lined road all the way to the four seasons property. @fslanai is one of 2 hotels on the entire Island and I love that. There's no traffic, no noise, no problems, it's just you, the incredible landscape and the ocean.
During my stay at @fslanai on the #HawaiibyFS trip I got to experience many activities. UTVing, a private dinner under the stars with friends and a Katamaran tour of the island, but free diving out on the coast of Lanai facing the massive sea cliffs had to be one of my most memorable experiences on this island with @fourseasons on their new experiences package in Hawaii. #fourseasons
I'm trying to work on letting myself rest. Yesterday I went someplace that holds a lot of memories from a long time ago. It was a place I thought I was safe in. I felt comfortable. Now I know none of that is true.
Yesterday I managed to walk through the doors. I want to say that it was all no big deal. That I only stayed there for about three hours and only for half of the event going on.
I'm trying to remind myself that it was a big deal. I did it. I did what I planned on doing. Now, I will spend the day resting. I will take some time for self care.
Tomorrow I will go back to my regular routine felling rested and knowing that I accomplished something big. Even though it feels small.
