“Given your performance on your cognitive evaluation, medical history, and your family’s recollection of your memory decline, I am afraid you are in the early stages of Alzheimer’s disease”, said the attending looking back at me as a sign to go ahead and interpret this life changing diagnosis to the obtuse woman sitting in front of me. My heart raised and my throat felt like it was in a knot. After all, this was my first day on the job as a bilingual neuropsychologist technician and it felt way too real, way too quick, to step into my role in my first entry level job after graduating college in 2016.
The sorrow in the woman’s face was evident, followed by heavy tears running down her cheek. The woman’s daughter portrayed a brave, serious facial expression as she took in a deep breath fighting back her tears. It was her turn to be strong, it was her turn to be her rock.
It’s during these raw, emotional, and vulnerable patient interactions that my interest in a career in medicine is solidified.
The aim of this account is to narrate short stories of meaningful patient interactions and my experiences as a non traditional premed, minority, low-income, first generation college graduate. I will share my setbacks & lessons learned and an overall reflection of my journey to medical school. I hope to shed light to the ones coming before me and share a different perspective to the ones in front of me. Please feel free to follow my bumpy road to becoming physician. We all have a little to learn from one another.
We caught up with Jeanine from @the_unbound_collective yesterday to discuss some incredible #experiences within #australia. We couldn’t be happier to be collaborating and cannot wait to share with you what is being developed.

Experience to me is an expansion of my heart, spirit & soul. It is a way to know who I am at my core and to use all of my divinely given gifts.
At my core I know my purpose in life is to love, grow, give & to find my unique ways to do all of these things.
For the past five years on my birthday I have made it a priority to gift myself an experience. Typically those have been very centered about spending quality time with those I love.
This year I decided to gift myself a bit of an intensive experience. Six days of total immersion. Six days that run from eleven in the afternoon to three in the morning with minimal breaks. Six days of discovering & breaking down my needs, values, beliefs, subconscious mind, and life habits. Six days of discovering my beautiful gifts and how I can operate at the highest level to fulfill my purpose in life.
Life is calling me to be the version of myself I’m always meant to be.
The moral of my story is that I could not imagine being anywhere else & learning how to be the true me so I can continue to offer so much more to all of you.
From the bottom of my heart-thank you for the birthday wishes. Thank you all for being your beautiful selves & lights in my life. I’m truly blessed to have this community & every lovely soul in it. 🧡
Wish we were able to do this wherever and whenever we want 💦 It gives you such an amazing feeling to be able to swim with these beautiful creatures. Who’s ever experienced anything similar to this? Share your experiences with us below 👇🏼 •
