How incredibly fortunate am I to be able to see this spectacular view every day right outside my office door? When I first moved to the Netherlands, I had conflicted feelings about this country. I’d left behind my friends, my department, my college, and my alma mater in Cambridge for a whole world I knew nothing about. I knew I had a “house” here, but this did not at all feel like a home. But now... I find myself tempted to cancel my travel plans just for that extra 96 hours in the Netherlands that could go towards my favorite pastime here — strollin’ by the canals — and spending time with colleagues who have become truly valuable and enjoyable friends to me.
I was raised as a nomad and probably will remain so for the rest of my life, but I know that a place or a country has claimed my heart when the mere thought of leaving pains me deeply. And the remedy to this painful separation may be having just a little extra time — and certainly the conviction that better times await elsewhere.
