REVIEW: Teeling Single Pot Still (Batch 1).
NOTES: Citrus, grapes, cashew, spices.
There was huge anticipation for the first batch of Teeling’s own distillate after years of building up their reputation maturing and bottling unique expressions of sourced whiskeys. And rightly so. However the first thing I noticed when I took the bottle out of its tube was the lack of info on the label about this whiskey's maturation. Prior Teeling releases have proudly advertised the vessels in which the whiskey was finished (rum, wine, port casks etc.) but their first Dublin-distilled effort keeps its cards closer to its chest, which is an interesting choice. In terms of palette, the charred sweetness of ex-bourbon casks is slightly milder here than in other Irish whiskeys, but I couldn't detect any strong sherry notes either, instead picking out strong citrus and grape notes, with a slight hint of dry cashew. Which led me down the rabbit hole of the internet to confirm (at least one of) my suspicions... Teeling matured their single pot still output in a combination of Virgin Oak, ex-wine and ex-bourbon casks. Suddenly the liquid made sense. Ultimately this is a very unique spirit selling at a far better price than a lot of other first batch Irish Pot Still releases. If you like their Single Grain expression, you'll likely love this. It shows huge promise for the future and gets marks for invention, though in my opinion ends up on the slightly harsh side due to the prominence of bitter citrus and spice. Still a good one for the collection and a good conversation starter. [7.5/10 from me.] 7️⃣.5️⃣ x 🥃
Have you tried it yet?
