Duchesse de Bourgogne. 📚Pictured here with Tripwire, the third entry in Lee Child's Jack Reacher series of thrillers. 🍺🍺🍺
#review : Duchesse de Bourgogne is my favorite perennially-available beer. I consider it all but perfect. So when I discovered that they made a twist on that recipe featuring chocolate and cherry, I was both thrilled and appalled. It's like someone built an Arby's around Michelangelo's David.
I'll say this right up front: this does not hold a candle to the original. Few beers do.
Chocolate Duchesse Cherry tastes like a Flemish brown, darker and maltier than a Flemish red (of which the original Duchesse is the exemplar) . The cherry tang and cocoa flavors are noticeable but not overpowering. There is a noticeable yeastiness, even a vegemite kind of flavor.
Carbonation is nice and lively, with fine bubbles. Head is big and light and somewhat short-lived. A respectable 6.7% ABV. Very expensive, at $23.99 for a four-pack of 11.2 ounce bottles at BevMo. Indeed, it would normally be out of my price range; I only sprang for it because of the association with Duchesse.
Overall, this is a fine kriek bruin, but bears an unjustifiable price tag and fails to live up to the imposing legacy of Duchesse de Bourgogne. 🍻🍻🍻

The Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “The feet of a servant will not touch the ground until he asked about his life and how he spent it; his knowledge and how he acted upon it; his wealth and how he acquired it and spent it and his body and how it was used.” [Tirmidhi]

Any other water in the world is tastier than the water in my own bowl!
Qs. Al-Ma’ idah : 90
“O you who have believed, indeed, intoxicants, gambling, [sacrificing on] stone alters [to other than Allah ], and divining arrows are but defilement from the work of Satan, so avoid it that you may be successful”
Qs. Al-Baqarah : 219
“They ask you about wine and gambling. Say, "In them is great sin and [yet, some] benefit for people. But their sin is greater than their benefit." And they ask you what they should spend. Say, "The excess [beyond needs]." Thus Allah makes clear to you the verses [of revelation] that you might give thought.”
Sahih Muslim Vol. 5, Book 23(Drinks), Hadith 4964 (muflihun.com)
“Ibn 'Umar, through another chain of transmitters;
reported Allah's Messenger (Peace be upon him) having said this: Every intoxicant is Khamr and every intoxicant is forbidden”.
Sunan Abu Dawood Vol. 4, Book 27, Hadith 3672
Narrated Abdullah Ibn Abbas:
The Messenger of Allah (Peace be upon him) said: Every intoxicant is khamr (wine) and every intoxicant is forbidden. If anyone drinks wine, Allah will not accept prayer from him for forty days, but if he repents, Allah will accept his repentance. If he repeats it a fourth time, it is binding on Allah that He will give him tinat al-khabal to drink.
He was asked: What is tinat al-khabal, Messenger of Allah? He replied: Discharge of wounds, flowing from the inhabitants of Hell. If anyone serves it to a minor who does not distinguish between the lawful and the unlawful, it is binding on Allah that He will give him to drink the discharge of wounds, flowing from the inhabitants of Hell.
