NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT: A trend in western democracies has been to decentralize party politics, giving voters direct say in making decisions. Yet primaries, ballot initiatives, referenda and term limits weakened political parties as systems. Voters “elect anti-establishment figures who would not have been taken seriously half a generation ago,” explain Frances McCall Rosenbluth and Ian Shapiro in an essay based on their book entitled Responsible Parties. “Incumbency, which used to be a decisive advantage, seems increasingly to be a liability as tossing the bums out shortens political half-lives at every turn. Angry voters flail at their own impotence, waging semi-permanent war on the politicians they elect.” The 2008 global financial crisis along with widening inequality and corruption add to the anger. Governments can reverse the trends that threaten democracy by strengthening party power, giving party leaders ability to block unsuitable candidates. The essay offers recommendations for restoring party leaders’ ability to construct platforms with broad public appeal and select the most competent leaders for carrying out priorities. – YaleGlobal // Visit yaleglobal.yale.edu for the full story by Frances McCall Rosenbluth and Ian Shapiro (both professors of Political Science at Yale University and the authors of Responsible Parties: Saving Democracy from Itself, published by Yale University Press) and follow @yaleglobal for more globalization news

July 4, 2019. "Understanding the rights, freedoms and responsibilities contained in the constitution. Like many well-intentioned things, can be harmful when taken to an extreme". >Robert longley.

The Egypt campaign was own project of Napoleon. With the seizure of Egypt, a province of the Ottoman Empire, it was put forward as an attempt to blockade the British from accessing the Far East. It was also about to secure France's Mediterranean trade in the face of British competition. The current administration, in a sense, has shown interest in the proposal to send away Napoleon from France.

🇬🇧 In the “Great Dictator” film, at final part Charlie Chaplin speeches:
You, the people have the power - the power to create machines.
The power to create happiness!
You, the people, have the power to make this life free and beautiful, to make this life a wonderful adventure.
Then - in the name of democracy - let us use that power - let us all unite.
Let us fight for a new world - a decent world that will give men a chance to work - that will give youth a future and old age a security.
By the promise of these things, brutes have risen to power.
But they lie!
They do not fulfil that promise.
They never will!
Dictators free themselves but they enslave the people!
Now let us fight to fulfil that promise!
Let us fight to free the world - to do away with national barriers - to do away with greed, with hate and intolerance.
Let us fight for a world of reason, a world where science and progress will lead to all men's happiness.
in the name of democracy, let us all unite! #ww2#ww1#adenoidhynkel#charliechaplin#democracy#inthenameofdemocracy#greatdictator

This is my roommate @daehako and he’s a Democrat running for office of Judicial Delegate for 50th Assembly District in North Brooklyn
Who can vote: registered voters who live in Assembly District 50 (Greenpoint, Williamsburg, Navy Yard) VOTE FOR HIM TUESDAY!!! As he says the fight against Trump AND the Uber rich Democratic establishment starts at the ground level of politics. The establishment machine is counting on apathy for voting on positions like this. Daeha knows his stuff and works tirelessly knocking on doors even when he’s not campaigning. He loves America and wants corporate money out of campaigns and a real change for the working class. . . . . . #democrats#democracy#northbrooklyn#greenpointbrooklyn#williamsburg

Coming full circle nearly 20 years later, networking in Hollywood on the Sunset strip at the Variety TV Summit. Aging isn’t supposed to be kind in LA, but I had so much more fun than when I was 17! So much has changed yet stayed the same. As a young woman, I found myself intimidated, sometimes harassed by male entertainment executives who attempted #metoomoments I’m still trying to forget. This time, I’m grateful my fierce female Run producers asked me to fly in for the Variety event filled with interested, insightful and kind industry execs. So many more women at the table (still not enough!) Awesome to be there with an entirely different level of confidence (refined by fire) and share Run with TV execs from the Emmys / Television Academy Casting Society of America, Netflix, Hulu and so many more. Felt so good to support female empowerment! We need SO many more women to RUN for political office! #varietytvsummit#voting#vote#election#politics#midterms#democracy#electionday#votingmatters#elections#america#usa#yourvotecounts#womensempowerement#metoo
