An early 2017 D3 v3 block entry applying Mercator projection to counties topojson. I needed individual maps of several states for a work project. For this one, I simplified deldersveld's projection, cleaned it up, straightened it out, and applied one of my favorite color combos: gray and yellow.
What I love most about D3 is that it takes advantage of browser technologies so that these visualizations are easy to style for anyone who knows front end code.
Nowadays, I still rely heavily on D3, though it's moved on to newer versions it is still an incredible charting library that makes us data viz designers feel like superheroes. .

Sallie Krawcheck, CEO & founder of @ellevest, is the third woman we're honoring as part of our “7 to Inspire” series before the @synapseflorida Summit. We're so impressed with the mission of her company, which uses an algorithm tailored specifically to women’s incomes and life cycles to help them reach their financial goals. How cool is that? #synapsesummit

There is no excuse to stop learning.

Started to run some analysis on my fitbit for 6 months.
Not only do I do analysis as my day job but I also do it as a hobby. #geek
I don't usually post about this but want to start doing this more. Plus pretty data visualisations :D
These graphs show a quick comparison of the distribution of calories burned the first graph by month and the second for the day of the week.
The coloured box shows the middle 50% aka interquartile range. The middle line shows the median the exact middle of the entire distribution.
The lines (aka whiskers) shows the rest of the distribution so the top indicates the max for that month or day and the bottom shows the min.
1. Notably my calories burned took a dip in September contextually this is because I got sick ! But shows I picked it back up in December.
2. The outlier in October is the fitness fest day skewing the entire scale upwards !
3. Wednesday is higher than other days because for a while I attended street dance follower by body combat.
Great color pallette choice by Lucas Lopez on this eye opening chart showing the breakdown of population versus language. From the author: "There are at least 7,102 known languages alive in the world today. Twenty-three of these languages are a mother tongue for more than 50 million people. The 23 languages make up the native tongue of 4.1 billion people. We represent each language within black borders and then provide the numbers of native speakers (in millions) by country. The colour of these countries shows how languages have taken root in many different regions."

2018: full, one year time lapse of surface winds over the North Atlantic by nullschool
This animation shows a full, one year time lapse animation of surface winds from Jan 1, 2018 until Jan 1, 2019, over the North Atlantic. The data come from the National Weather Service's GFS numerical weather model. Blue colors represent slower winds. Greens and yellows are faster winds. Streamlines show the direction of the wind in each frame of the animation.
