I don't know how I lived in London for years without a bike. As soon as I started commuting to an office job ~4 years ago, my body, mind and the city was transformed for the better. Everyday since I've made the choice to make my body my transport; gaining fitness, mental clarity and burning fat not oil. Though I may not treat my Beta bike with the same love I do my Alpha, @ribble_cycles SL, I appreciate it and the freedom it brings just the same.

It's the @gozwift National Championship this weekend; the perfect opportunity to put my extreme race training and 5 w/kg FTP fitness to the test. The championship race provides maximum stimulus and motivation to push myself beyond my perceived limits - this is where I love to ride. HOWEVER, during my last live-streamed race on YouTube (link in bio) you may have seen my power meter catastrophically FAILED. Long story short: no power meter, no National Championships for Ash.
To ensure this isn’t the case come Sunday, I'm currently on a 40 mile mission out of London on my bike to pick up the last resort, fallback solution whilst crossing my fingers all the way that the brand new replacement crank arm @ribble_cycles have gone out of their way to attempt to get the manufacturer to ship me as a replacement arrives in time.
It's not the build-up to the Zwift National Championships I had anticipated, but whenever I get the opportunity to make my body my transport I’ll take it and use it to gain fitness. 💪🏻 Will I get to race Sunday? Watch this space... 🤞🏻🚴🏻♂️⚡️
The term FUNCTIONAL TRAINING has been around for years however often this term is a little misunderstood. New “functional toys” are added to gym floor spaces everyday. Sadly due to a lack of programming they are not always used for the purpose they were intended.
Functional training is form of training that should train your body in a way that allows you to thrive in your chosen sporting activity and or your day to day activities. Often the dramatic jump from what we do day to day to what we do in the gym is so severe that what you think is functional could be having the opposite effect.
Right now I am training to cycle 510 miles non stop in 40 hours (in recognition of the fact I turn 40 in June this year). This involves me spending upwards of 20 hours per week on the bike. Anyone who spends even 5 hours a week on a bike coupled with most of our daily routines is likely to feel the effects (in a positive and negative way) to reduce the negative effects I ensure my non cycle training helps my body to remain FUNCTIONAL and mobile. Check out the video and you will see this does not mean throwing about any fancy toys or hanging off any rigs. Now I am not hating on functional zones in fact I love them. I am however saying make sure you get some good advice from someone who understands what it is you want to achieve.
