Day 12: Have your cake and eat it too!
It is no secret that most of the time science is not much more than lesson after lesson in how to accept, understand, deal with, and even revel in, failure. To come back time and time again, after the lastest 'failure' - a rejected manuscript, unsuccessful grant proposal, experiment that did not work or presentation that went poorly - requires resilience and determination. But the personal weight of these failures becomes immensely more bearable when you have a supportive network of peers to commiserate, comfort and cojole you back to lab bench.
As lab mates, it is so crucial to sympathize with the lows, and celebrate the highs. Even when the 'highs' are something simple (a successful experiment) or significant (a manuscript accepted for publication), these are invaluable opportunities to inclusively build these support networks.
Today our lab group did plenty of supportive-network-building over a delicious carrot cake for a new student's birthday. Not only was sharing birthday wishes a welcome respite to this afternoon's admin tasks, the cake was delicious - carrot is one of my favs after all, the icing gets me every time!
Happy sciencing 👩🏼🔬🎂
