"If stars dropped out of heaven,
And if flowers took their place,
The sky would still look very fair,
And fair earth's face.
Winged angels might fly down to us
To pluck the stars,
Be we could only long for flowers
Beyond the cloudy bars."
Poem by Christina Georgina Rossetti
So, yeah. I like doing foliage. Most of this project was spent learning about the roses themselves and trying to up my foliage game. I screwed around with different ways to color the leaves as well as different ways to actually put together the leaflets. I wanted to vary the number of leaves as well as the colors and size to help show the growth cycle.
I ran out of time as I was getting ready to add beetle damage and some other blemishes I wanted.🤷🏻♂️. Oh well. Next time.
To get the closest to scale when it comes to stem thickness I use cloth covered 32g wire. After making and discarding a bunch of leaflets, my only real change from her method is to have all five wires come together at the base. It allows me to have a smoother and continuous thickening of the stem with less chance for weird bumps.
For the coloring I have pretty much decided that pastels for highlights are the way to go....and markers via an airbrush system work phenomenally well for everything else.
wanted to add that one of the biggest factors in making them really good in my eyes was doing a very fine serration on the leaves. I did a couple leaves at a time to help speed it up...but... just embracing the suck and power through.
