Rustin [pen, 3.5x2.5in] 🖤
My favorite part about pen drawings is making something become three dimensional with just line work and glossy marble eyes. The closer you draw the lines together, the deeper the shadow or color is perceived. Happy Tuesday!
Fluid and structured. Structured fluidity. Fluid structures.
Some people love to exist in environments absent of rules, standards, structure, process, because any amount of definition feels suffocating, devoid of innovation. Some people love to create within guardrails because they find the constraints to be focusing, intellectually challenging, and sometimes even — freeing.
A blank page to some can feel overwhelming with endless possibilities. How do you choose a path? Where do you begin?
A creative expression with a defined outcome and a process to get there can feel domineering to others. What if the direction needs to change once we learn more? What if we don’t know enough to pick a direction?
Me personally? I like both fluid and structured creativity. I might prefer structured fluidity because it feels productive, focused, directional. I often want to end up somewhere, not just end up.
I also think we create the rules and therefore we can change them. Well, perhaps not all rules. Still, it’s not bothersome to me that they are there. I think it’s just a way of leveraging what’s been learned, collaborate across others, create common understanding.
Perhaps that comes through in this painting. The fluidity freely passes through the structure that’s only there to really anchor your eye.
Do you think it’s structured fluidity or fluid structures? What do you prefer when creating?

Kels here! You know what happens a lot since I own a clothing store AND have the world’s most supportive people in my life? I show up to social events matching someone I love. Ain’t mad about it.👯♀️Today my mom and I were twinning at work in the Starlet Sweater. She’s the blonde one (I know, we basically look the same age). It’s one of my favorite items right now and I highly suggest you get it. Then we can allll be matching.🌟 #moonbeambabes

Sometimes you just need to hang out with your best friend, have a glass of Chardonnay, and put on crowns to feel oh so special. At least that’s what these two loves do on cloudy days! What do you do when the sun doesn’t shine? #solveigstudiowbjnl

"Yes, and ..." OR "No, but ..." ??⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Which are you more likely to utter? You see, just a little bit reframing can make ALL the difference.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Sure, we’ve all heard about the power of positive thinking … but I’m telling you, this shit is REAL. The more you block the love available to you in every situation and roll with your fear-based thoughts, the more you block your access to creating what you DO want.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I should know! I’ve held myself back in more ways than I care to recount -- though I’ve made a commitment to share many of those with you here over the next couple of months.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
When you think or say something negative, even if you *think* you don’t really mean it, that thought carries energy. And every thought creates an effect.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
In the MODEL that I teach, thoughts create our feelings. So even when it’s subtle, even when you’re not even AWARE that you’re thinking it, your seemingly benign ridicule or judgement or criticism or rejection of an idea creates a feeling in you. And FEELINGS are always what drives our ACTIONS. And ACTIONS, taken over time, are what create our RESULTS in life.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Don’t like your result? I guarantee you we can trace it back to a thought. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
“An undisciplined mind, easily tempted into faithless and unloving thoughts, is a huge deterrent to success. “ ~Marianne Williamson⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I’m not saying you shouldn’t say “No.” It’s very appropriate in a LOT of situations (more on that later.) But the example at the beginning is intended just to help you stop and think before you react. Don’t just do what you always do because that’s the way you’ve always done it. If you’re looking for big change in your life, you can start by making even just the subtlest shifts in your thinking and find that the effects will start compounding.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I’ve been in a drawing drought for a long long time and this is what happened when I sat down to draw today. Not the best, but it didn’t feel like complete torture. So that’s progress. #hcadigitals#haleymakesflowers

(PS. Side note: How tricky is it to catch a screenshot of a video sometimes!? 🤣)

T E N // I've seen #tenyearchallenge photos lately, and it made me curious how much I've physically changed in the last decade. Turns out I still have the same hair length as I did when I was 21! But I look a whole lot more tired now 😂 Regardless, I've been happy and blessed over the last decade. I made many important friendships during that time, including meeting my husband in 2014 and having our first child in 2018! Basically, looking back on my twenties, I can only feel gratitude for the time passed and excitement for the things to come. #thisis31#millenialmom#throwback#feelingblessed#meetthemaker#shorthairdontcare#sandiegocreatives
Got a new iPad and I’m learning how to draw using the Apple Pencil. It is...weird? But I might keep doing these quick 10 minute minimal sketches.

Day 13 of #21daysinmyartworld by @taraleaver
I thought I might give you a little insight into how I make my art prints. All of my prints have been originally hand drawn with graphite, applying layer after layer of graphite, erasing and blending, to get the effect I’m after. I particularly enjoy drawing feathers and fur. I always start with the eyes, I just feel it’s integral to the whole picture, so it needs to be right before I do any more. Drawings take me on average 10/20 hours depending on the size. Next I digitise it, to do this I use my SLR, I generally take several macro shots and will stitch them together in photoshop. I also have to edit out the background and sometimes I add digital features, like a background colour...or in this case, tassels (using he lovely colours of some ink artworks I did at @megan_wally_art art workshop). Because we’ll...why not. Do there you have, a brief insight into my process.
If you have any questions about my process, please drop them here 👇☺️
Take today as your opportunity to start embracing your capabilities.

▪️Comparing Copic Neutrals▪️ @copicmarker has three different lines of grey alcohol inks. They are all fantastic, but different from one another. Here are some examples of each. I tend to like the cool grey with blues and the warm Grey's with reds and burgundys. I use the neutrals most though. They work with everything! 😍
Top row L to R: cool Greys 3, 6, 7 and 10
Middle row L to R: Neutral Greys 3, 6, 7 and 10
Bottom row L to R: warm grey 3, 6, 7 and 10
Hiraeth (n.) a homesickness for a home to which you cannot return, a home which maybe never was; the nostalgia, the yearning, the grief for the lost places of your past
One of those rare words that pulls, for a second, the blurred mess of human feeling into beautiful, painful focus. It’s often been said that the feeling of hiraeth is untranslatable. But perhaps the feeling is universal and instantly understood. Hiraeth is what the bird feels for its nest when dusk falls, a longing which a boat feels for a river bank. And this is what my needle and thread translates as hiraeth. A remote home far removed from city life, overlooked by a tall oak tree and a rickety lamppost. You can read more about this piece on my Etsy store.
To yearn for a thing you cannot name - that is hiraeth. What does hiraeth mean to you? I would love to know 🖤
