I used to love shooting with black and white 35mm film because of the rich tones, which this (digital) photo reminds me of. The craftsmanship involved with developing film and making prints by hand, in the darkroom, was truly appealing to me. I even had a darkroom in my basement at one time! It was fun, and maybe I’ll go back to it one day. Anyway, this expired #cormorant was beautiful to me as I passed it on the beach yesterday. Maybe some will find this dead creature morbid, but I rather enjoy these reminders that death is simply part of the cycle and the chance to appreciate a beautiful animal at a closer distance than usual.
Can the common be uncommon in its own unique way? Every fall a large group of noisy Cormorants show up at the Lake - squawking at one another sounding like sea lions, they jostle for the best spots on the dock... they rarely catch my eye but when this one flew bay covered in fresh droplets of water, his turquoise eyes set on a landing spot, he actually did! Happy weekend my dear IG friends! 🐦 They sometimes build nests in large colonies with their own feces. However, this causes massive damage to the trees below because the feces can quickly build to massive quantities.
🐦In Asia, some people have trained cormorants to fish for them. Each time the cormorant catches 7 fish, they’re given one to eat.
🐦Some species of cormorant include: the double-breasted cormorant, little black cormorant, Indian cormorant, European shag, rock shag, Bounty shag, Japanese cormorant, Auckland shag, Cape cormorant, crowned cormorant, Crozet shag, and the Georgia shag.
🐦Cormorant colonies can have up to 4,000 members. Many of the species will hunt together.
🐦On average, a cormorant of any species can reach speeds of up to 55 kilometers per hour.
🐦Cormorants will become sexually mature at around the age of 2 or 3. The sexual maturity depends on food availability, the more food available the younger the breeding age.
🐦Cormorants live to be about 25 years old.
🐦Cormorant eggs and offspring are the primary prey to larger predatory birds, such as eagles, gulls and crows. However, ground colonies can be vulnerable to foxes and racoons.
🐦Cormorants have short wings due to their need to swim. Due to this, they have the highest flight cost of any other bird
🐦 The species name comes from the Greek word phalakros meaning “bald” and korax meaning “raven.”
🐦Cormorant comes from the LAtin words corvus and marinus, which together mean “sea raven.”
🐦 Cormorants make pellets out of bones and scales of the fish they eat and spit out.
