The Scramble for Africa begin in XIX century for three reasons. In South America Europeans found a plant named Cinchona and Incas revealed quinine. Studying Europeans discovered that quinine can cure malaria and so for the first time non-African peoples could live, send armies or colonist. Then came Suez Canal. For centuries ships had to circumnavigate Africa to reach India limiting cost and valour of naval commerce. For the first time in over 150 years Great Britain saw India in danger and moved all of his forces to take control of Eastern Africa. This because steam power that moved ships: to reach India a country needed ports to stock carbon first and nafta after to move ships. In the Scramble for Africa Great Britain choose to make Indian Ocean a British Sea, leaving north western Africa to France while in the Mediterranean sea London control Gibraltar, Malta and Egypt Khedivate. Cecil Rhodes incarnates this politics with the Utopia of a British Eastern Africa and a railroad from Cape to Cairo. However this was not possible because France and Germany were both enemy and so London decided to listen Italian request and permitted to Italy to came in a beach in the Red Sea... #history#colonialism#italiancolonialism#scrambleforafrica#britishempire#suezcanal#india#france#cecilrhodes#imperialism#africa#colonies#colony
[This day in history] 22September1982 Margaret Thatcher visited China.
The aim of the visit was solving the problems of the Hong Kong. Hong Kong had been a Britian colony since 26 January 1841. At that time, the Qing Dynasty was a weakness, so it ceded Hong Kong islands to British. But this time, the chairperson was Ding Xuaoping. He was not a weak emperor.
The Iron lady vs the Iron corp.
At that time, The Thatcher said that Chinese government must abide by the treaties. But he said that was impossible. Then Thatcher said that hong-kongese economy had been built up by the British. But he said he must will use the suitable way to rule the hong-kongeses. Next she said that the disastrous effects would come to Hong Kong if China must let Hong Kong government transfer out to British. Ding Xuaoping said Chinese government would face the disastrous effects. Finally, she suggested many ways to hold the Britian power in Hong Kong but all ways were refused.
Thatcher was shocked by Ding Xuaoping's staunch mind. After the accessing, she tumbled.
Hong Kong was transferred to Chinese government become a corollary.
At the edge of Hyde Park stands this statue of Governor Lachlan Macquarie. If you've heard the name "Macquarie" somewhere around Sydney, it is a place, street, feature or company named after this man, or his wife. This is a modern addition to the Sydney landscape, installed here in 2013.
Lachlan Macquarie was the fifth Governor of NSW and was responsible for many initiatives that shaped the colony in the years 1810 to 1821 and beyond.
These include producing the first official currency specifically for circulation in Australia, appointing emancipists (former convicts) to government positions, authorising exploration sending Blaxland, Wentworth and Lawson over the Blue Mountains, ordering the establishment of Bathurst (Australia's first inland city). The street layout of modern central Sydney is based upon a street plan established by Macquarie. And for those from overseas who are driven crazy that cars drive on the LEFT in Australia, that was also a Macquarie decision. He set that rule in 1820 for all horse drawn traffic to keep to the left.
A man with a powerful and controversial history, there are plenty more Macquarie stories out there to find. If you visit the library of Macquarie University, you can see a room from Macquarie's original house, brought here and reconstructed in the entrance to the library.
