Did you know that most historic buildings in Amsterdam are slightly tipped over? It's mainly because this way the rain won't stain the front of the houses, but there is another reason..
The largest concentration of tilting houses are found within Amsterdam’s 17th-century canal belt and many were built around the same time as these historic waterways.
Almost every house in this part of Amsterdam was built on top of long, wooden poles that were driven into the ground beneath the city. Although these foundations are generally very stable, over time some houses shifted forwards, causing them to lurch over the canals.

What’s fascinating about Myanmar is that so much of the culture and way of life has remained unchanged for centuries.
Until 8 years ago, the only country with fewer cell phones than Myanmar was North Korea, and most Burmese people didn’t even have access to a rotary phone or landline. ☎️ Mobile phones were especially reserved for the elite, with SIM cards costing as much as $2,000 on the black market. Due to its isolationist, oppressive government regime, Myanmar was, in many ways, a living time capsule.
As the government began to democratize, the telecommunications system evolved some 150 years almost overnight. 📲 Now, Myanmar is one of the fastest growing mobile markets in the world, with as much as 90% of the population having access to a smart phone (even in rural villages powered only by spotty solar panels).
People who, a decade ago, weren’t even aware of what was happening in the town over, can now scour Facebook for news on international politics, call relatives hundreds of miles away, order a taxi via ride-sharing app Grab, and take online classes. Those without bank accounts (95% of the population) can now access mobile payment and money transfer systems, and women who’d never be able to get a bank loan can now easily call up relatives to ask to borrow money.
Just try to imagine what it would be like to jump from almost zero connectivity straight to smart phones — internet, Facebook & Twitter, fancy cameras, the whole deal. It’s wild to see the role a singular product the size of a human hand 🖐🏼 can have in propelling a country’s financial, social, and educational systems forward. Obviously there’s a long way to go, but in a way, these smart phones are the gateway.
Also this is a photo of me, at one of the oldest pagodas in the world, with an elderly monk who approached me to take selfies on his new smart phone to send to friends & family. ☺️ Talk about a history mashup.
A look from last week, wearing this darling outfit running from brunch to a party. Next week is going to be a very relaxed week for us, no school, but a couple kid's play dates, a couple parties, and a couple fun events to go to, and we have a "wine country visit" or "adventure in the mountain" thought as a getaway, but nothing really confirmed yet. How about you? Any plans for the Thanksgiving week?
