In August 1918, the dealer René Gimpel called on Monet at Giverny along with Georges Bernheim and reported seeing a large quantity of six-foot-wide Nymphéas in the studio.
Monet staged a special exhibition of these recent works for his visitors, arranging them in a circle on the floor to create a simulacrum of the lily pond, rather than positioning them upright on easels.
“In its infinity, the water and the sky had neither beginning nor end,” Gimpel recounted. “It was as though we were present at one of the first hours of the birth of the world. It was mysterious, poetic, deliciously unreal” (quoted in R. King, Mad Enchantment: Claude Monet and the Painting of the Water Lilies, New York, 2016, p. 179). (@ Christie’s)

Vincent van Gogh, Portrait du Dr. Gachet, oil on canvas, 66x57 cm, 1890.
On 15 May 1990, Japanese businessman, Ryoei Saito, bought van Gogh’s Portrait of Dr Gachet (1890) for $82.5m at Christie's, New York, then the highest ever total paid for a work of art at auction and equivalent to around $154.5m today. ⠀
Saito later announced that he wished to have the Van Gogh painting cremated with him when he died. Colleagues tried to explain that this was just a figure of speech, expressing the owner’s passion for the work, but the art world was concerned that one of the artist’s masterpieces would be lost. ⠀
Saito later stated that he would consider giving it to a museum in his will, but the painting has not been seen since.
Saito died in 1996.

Aimé Maeght was a French art dealer, collector, lithographer, and publisher. He founded the Galerie Maeght in Paris and Barcelona.
Maeght made his Paris debut as a major art dealer on the Rue de Teheran in 1945, after World War II. On sale were all the paintings done by Henri Matisse during the war. He also represented Alexander Calder, Georges Braque, Marc Chagall, Alberto Giacometti, Joan Miró, and Fernand Léger.
In 1956 Le Chat was bought by Baroness Johanna ‘Hansi’ Lambert, which has remained in the family’s collection ever since.
Legendary Lambert Collection was started in the late 19th Century by Baron Léon Lambert, who, with his wife, Baroness Lucie Lambert, the granddaughter of James de Rothschild.
This passion was continued by their son, Baron Henri Lambert and his Viennese wife, Baroness Johanna ‘Hansi’ Lambert.

Vincent van Gogh, Coin de jardin avec papillons, oil on canvas, 50x61 cm, 1887.
The painting originally was at Theo van Gogh, his brother and art dealer.
After the death of Vincent and soon Theo, Theo’s wife, Johanna van Gogh-Bonger, became keeper and advocate of Vincent’s immense collection of paintings, sketches and letters.
When Van Gogh died he was a complete unknown, his paintings fetching under 10 dollars.
Johanna organized, translated and catalogued the extraordinary correspondence between Theo and Vincent.
She arranged the exhibitions, and promotions of the work of Vincent van Gogh, often without success. Museums didn’t want his works, even as a gift, and people still laughed at his exhibited paintings.
By her death in 1925, Johanna had secured for posterity Vincent van Gogh’s reputation as an artistic genius. (@ William J. Havlicek & David A. Glen)
The painting will be auctioned at @christiesinc, Impressionist and Modern Art Evening Sale, 11.11.2018, NY.
