#chasuble from #worldyouthday1997 held in #paris on #display at #themetcloisters
Initiated by Pope Saint John Paul II in 1985, World Youth Day (WYD) is an event for young people organized by the Catholic Church to celebrate the concepts of unity, acceptance, and community. For the 1997 WYD, the archbishop of Paris, Jean-Marie Cardinal Lustiger, commissioned the French designer Jean-Charles de Castelbajac to create vestments for a delegation of five hundred attending bishops and five thousand priests. Castelbajac based his design on the rainbow, "for its biblical associations—its link between humans and their Creator as established in the aftermath of Noah's Flood, when the rainbow became a symbol of peace and reconciliation." The chasubles for bishops featured five colors of the rainbow (green, blue, red, orange, and yellow) in vertical stripes running down the front and back. #themet#themetropolitanmuseumofart#rainbow#nyc
