well I’m as sick as a pickle and had a nice long coughing attack at the library, so everything is wonderful and I’m deep in the world of MAPS. .
Dedicating myself to @themoonpuppies this year, so I’m starting from their beginnings (of tiiiime) .
Title: Tabula Asiae V
Cartographer: Claudius Ptolemy/Giovanni Magini
Publisher: "Geografia cioe Descrittione Universale della Terra" by Giovanni Antonio Magini; Venice, c. 1596
Condition: There is a crease in the bottom left corner, otherwise the map is in excellent condition.
Now this is something you don't see often. A beautiful map from the late 16th century showing ancient Assyria, Media, Persia and Parthia (present day Iran, Iraq, and Turkey) with 18th century hand colouring.
Maps from the 16th century and before are very difficult to come by, let alone in such good condition. Ptolemy's maps are a fascinating look into the origins and evolution of cartography. His treatise on map projections was revolutionary and, centuries after his death, his translated works were highly influential on the cartographic traditions of both the medieval Caliphate and Renaissance Europe.
Giovanni Antonio Magini (1555–1617) was an Italian astronomer, astrologer, cartographer, and mathematician. He was famous for his supporting a geocentric system of the world and was respected enough to be chosen over Galileo Galilei to occupy the chair of mathematics at the University of Bologna in 1588. The map above is from one of Magini's most renowned works, his reduced edition of Ptolemy's 2nd century masterwork, "Geographia...". #antique#oldmap#cartography#geography#vintage#art#fineart#map#persia#iran#iraq#turkey#parthia#assyria#media#ptolemy#magini#16thcentury#venice#asiae#geographia#galileo#atlas
#Шеврон Федеральной Службы Геодезии и Картографии России [Federal service geodesy and cartography of Russia].

What country is across the ocean? By Laris Kalkris, Weiyi Cai for the Washington Post.
“The map shows the Western Hemisphere. The colored bands on the right side show European countries in blue and African countries in red. You can see that Africa is huge, and Europe is a lot farther north than you might think. On the left, Asian countries are shown in yellow, while the countries in Oceania are below them in blue. Australia ends up about on par with Buenos Aires. (Note that none of these maps provide an exhaustive list of the world's countries).”
“If you're in New York, you're actually about the same latitude (a measure of how far north or south you are from the Equator) as sunny Madrid. Washington is roughly on par with Lisbon, Portugal. France is positioned even farther north, with Paris at a higher latitude than Quebec or Maine. And England and Ireland are farther north than even Newfoundland. Much of the southern United States, starting with North Carolina, is on the same latitude as Africa. Casablanca, in Morocco, is about the same latitude as Atlanta, while Miami is level with Western Sahara.”

I would like to introduce you to the featured race of the Heavy Metal booklet I'm working on with @dungeonmasterdave called Metalheads.
Check out the full stats for this race on DMDaves website:
For a long time the people of Metalluria had felt abandoned by the goddess. Their promised land, an isolated island in the north, held nothing of the riches that were offered in the prophecies. The only ores they found in the mountains were heavy metals that made any armor forged from it worth less than the any armor that was forged on the mainland, as it had no redeeming qualities that would make up for the fact that it was much heavier. The Metallurians who were stubborn in their pride, and didn't have many options to the contrary, trained using the armor anyway and their army suffered because of it.
When a young Metallurian bard decided to use the metal for a new instrument he was designing, based on the popular Lute, he unwittingly unlocked the arcane powers locked inside the metal. The instrument, he called a Kithara, would change the nation of Metalluria forever.
Wielding the power of the Heavy Metal, their armors flowing with arcane energy unlocked and a new form of wizardy discovered, Metallurians had finally uncovered the secrets of their homeland.
As a passage from young to old, all Metallurians would be marked by the metal. Having metal infused tattoos engraved on their scalp. The arcane energy flowing through their body changed them, connected them. They would become known as metalheads. Long hair marked all who bare the mark as it grew rapidly after the metal entered their scalp. Only on the spots where they had tattoos their hair grow had been stunted.
