(Read Caption) I heard Mark Nepo, the poet-philosopher, being interviewed on a podcast the other day. He said something that stuck with me; we have to stop treating art like entertainment. I sat back upon hearing it.
We have to stop treating art like entertainment.
This past year, I have had a hard time allowing myself to be creative. There have been countless times that I have gone to write and I have somehow derailed myself in order to do something else instead. I have justified my unproductively on everything- I’ve been too upset, too harmonious, too excited, too fatigued, over stimulated, uninspired. The truth is that I have never embodied an emotion that is inhibitive to creation. They are enablers that I have to train myself to use. I have been treating art like entertainment. I have been making light of it; and I’d be lying if I said my spirit hasn’t been hanging a little low as a result.
The human spirit is made resilient by art. I mean this historically, as I mean this individually. I remember learning about the Monuments Men, the group of art historians, museum directors, and others, who scoured Europe to save tens of thousands of pieces of art that had been looted by the Nazis for much of WWII. To think, we were so close to having lost all of those works and their accompanied narratives. It is incomprehensible.
I remember thinking how significant their role was in the preservation of humanity. How many pieces of art have I lost myself in? How many installations have moved me? How many books have I buried myself into? How many performances have altered me? •
The most stagnant moments of my life have been artless. I would be nothing without art.

🇪🇬 #CAIRO: Egyptian authorities have quietly introduced restrictions on the sale of yellow reflective vests, fearing opponents might attempt to copy French protesters during next month’s anniversary of the 2011 popular uprising that toppled autocrat Hosni Mubarak.

How can I leave without hitting up the gym 💪🏽 ??? Mostly every day has been 10+ miles of sight seeing (lots and lots of cardio) so today I needed to get my swole on! #Egypt2018#Gym#Exercise#Cairo#Egypt
This marvellous view of the #Cairo Tower could be mistaken for a painting! Or is it a painting? You’re going to have to ask @krimamr because he’s the one who captured this magnificent picture… regardless of whether it is a painting or an actual shot through his lens! Cairo Tower was for a time the tallest building in #Africa. It stands in the Gezira district on Gezira Island in the River Nile, close to downtown Cairo. So if you’re planning to see #MyEgypt from high above, Cairo Tower is the place to go!
