A new blog post now live on my website: "In 2014 I awoke to the harsh reality that I was living in "the emptiness of a materialist, industrialized and spiritually impoverished society that had lost its connection to nature."
The quotation is from Albert Hofman, who accidentally created LSD in 1938.
There is a direct connection between my own state of reality, life and values and the creation and knowing of a substance that can alter the mind to create altered states of consciousness...." Link below for the remainder:
There’s a key problem with most kettlebell swinging movements, including the snatch. Driving through the heels. Why?
First let me make some clarifications. Swings need to be done heels down. Full stop. Snatches, cleans, high pulls etc, need to be learned first with heels down. But, there is a problem...
Only ever driving with the heels does not train extension through the foot, in addition to extension through the knee and hip.
Nearly every land based athletic movement requires driving and extending through the foot. So, for complete athletic and performance development, we need those movements in our training.
This is a more advanced move, that takes the right training to get to. But, know where you’re heading.
Pay attention to the feet in the slow clip.

Deadlifts and Back Pain
These two things do not need to be associated. When evaluating your own deadlift look at 2 important pieces:
1. The first 3” off the floor.
2. The first 3” of your hinge.
How you start a movement will always affect how you finish a movement. A bad start position relates to a bad finish position. A bad start position guarantees that your control and stability through the movement will not be at its best which correlates to back pain/discomfort. The spine when loaded is not meant to move at different segments. It should be one solid piece.
Exercises to fix poor start and finish position:
Turn the Volume up to hear the breathing pattern. Include 2-3 rounds as a warmup.
Bottom 3” + Breathing (video 1)
- Bring yourself down to the KB already in proper position - Create torque through the shoulders
- Take an inhale to 90% of your ability
- Pull your belly button into your spine
- Deadlift to 3-5” off the ground
- Hold this position, nasal inhale, mouth exhale for 20 seconds. Prove you can inhale up to 90% and still maintain the proper shape.
First 3” of your hinge + breathing (video 2)
- Start by standing tall
- Create torque through the shoulders
- Take an inhale to 90% of your ability
- Pull your belly button into your spine
- Hinge the first 3-5” of your deadlift
- Hold this position, nasal inhale, mouth exhale for 20 seconds. Prove you can continue to inhale 90% and still maintain the proper shape.

Valparaíso: A Painted City 💖 Spending a day walking the streets of Valparaíso is like living in a giant art gallery. Just two hours away from Santiago, Valparaíso stretches gently over 42 hills that frame a working port and choppy sea. At every street corner, you are bombarded with colour, ingenious design and creativity. At first glance, enormous murals catch and hold the eye but, if you look closer, tiny details - doodles, torn posters and the rough texture of countless stickers contribute just as vitally to the beauty of this city. This living and breathing sketchbook is a must-see for art lovers everywhere! #valparaiso#apaintedcity#artlovers#contemporaryart#murals#streetart#colour#living#breathing#sketchbook#gallerygirlgoes

We always practice various kinds of supplemental training after zazen practice on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and we're kicking off the new year with a focus on techniques that work specifically with movement and the breath.
Thursdays will focus on the Summer Breath exercise system, which is partially derived from breath techniques used in the hojo sword forms we practice at Daiyuzenji. The Summer Breath system includes techniques for stretching muscles connected to the body's breathing mechanisms, deep breathing exercises to oxygenate the blood, and movement exercises derived from calisthenics, yoga and martial arts to enhance circulation throughout the body and depth of breath.
Deep breathing and relaxation exercises have numerous health and psychological benefits, as described in this NPR article:
. "As it turns out, deep breathing is not only relaxing, it's been scientifically proven to affect the heart, the brain, digestion, the immune system -- and maybe even the expression of genes." Join us on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7-8 for zazen and then from 8-9 for movement and breath work (Tuesdays) or the Summer Breath system (Thursdays). •
▪️Did you know keeping plants like Aloe, Peace Lily, English Ivy, Dragon Tree, Bamboo Palm, Rubber Tree and Fiddle Leaf Fig throughout your home can help purify and oxygenate the air? This is especially beneficial to those with asthma or allergies. Some other helpful tools to have on hand to help purify your air and improve air quality are pink Himalayan Salt Lamps, Antibacterial and Antifungal vent filters, an air purifier, an air quality testing kit (try one from certifiedkit.com), and simply opening your windows in your home for a little bit of time each day. No better way to clear the air than using each of these tips for a happier, healthier home.

Feeling so BLESSED this morning after teaching Mindful Yoga last night! We were small in number but mighty in SPIRIT! Warriors, trees and mountains!!! 🧘📿☯️ 😊 #grateful#joy#happiness
Find your quiet spot and mediate. I'm sure a lot of you have heard of the term meditation and would like to start to meditate but don't know how. My recommendation would be to start of with just 5 minutes each day by doing the following.
1️⃣Find a conformable seated position.
2️⃣Close your eyes and relax each part of your body.
3️⃣Dont slouch yet don't be completely upright.
4️⃣Keep your hands where they feel comfortable.
5️⃣Begin to breath through your nose.
6️⃣Focus on your breathing, do not worry about thoughts that enter your mind, it's natural. 7️⃣Acknowledge your thoughts then let them go.
When I chose the INFINITY symbol for my jewlery line and what it represents. The Power of the Infinity Symbol by By Barbara Heider-Rauter
We all know what the infinity symbol — the sign that represents the immeasurable and the boundless — looks like, but very few of us know what power it holds. It has been highly prized for centuries, used for protection and the bringing of harmony and balance to opposing entities in many cultures. The band across the forehead of Egyptian pharaohs bore the image of a snake in the shape of a figure eight. It was also the number of Thoth, the Egyptian god of the Laws and of wisdom and magic. In Indian cultures, we see the infinity symbol in depictions of Kundalini energy and in the staffs carried by Hermes and Asclepius.
From a spiritual perspective, eight is the number of the initiate — those who have transcended the seven stages of awakening and passed through the seven heavens. Eight is the number linked with the power of resurrection and regeneration, symbolizing happiness and paradise regained. In Chinese tradition, it represents wealth and prosperity and is used in Feng Shui to arrange living spaces harmoniously. The infinity sign is also within us, in our very cells and the basic structure of our genes. It is in the double helix of the strands of our DNA, a continuous chain of figures-of-eight.
How can we make conscious use of the infinity symbol? How can this powerful and dynamic symbol help us in our daily lives? I suggest that when we feel the need for something, for example greater richness and serenity in our lives, we can draw an infinity symbol and inscribe these two words in each of the loops. A single loop can contain more than one concept. The lemniscate will bring dynamism and balance to whatever is important or of interest to us. It will help us to find harmony and equilibrium in every way, bringing balance to opposing forces.
The infinity sign can also provide help with healing. By visualizing or drawing the lemniscate as a symbol, we can use it on any part of the body where balance and harmony are needed. #energyhealing#infinity_light#reikimaster#intuitivecoach#selfcareforthesoul#crystalcreatrix#breathing
Watching musicians draw threads between music, movement, and mindfulness is probably THE MOST exciting thing about #Intermission. We are so sad to leave @interlochenarts, a place where students are so open to the union of different disciplines and make some real magic by exploring the parallels. Special thanks to the students who stopped by to work with us outside of our group classes, including @christinacj23 who came to see us TWICE! 🎶🙏🏽♥️
Jumping on this... I needed an excuse to pull this back out to remind those of you facing a battle with your physical or mental health...
A few of you that have come across my account recently may have the idea that it’s been easier for me in some way, genetically or because I’ve always had an active life... but truth is, the picture on the left was when I just finished playing rugby and completely lost my way. I went so far backwards that the way forwards felt impossible, this is where most give up, but please don’t 👊🏽.
Sparing you the long story... (after a health scare and battles with depression) a mentor came into my life and I decided I was not going to let life pan out this way. I made the first step towards improving my health, went to a yoga class, stopped binge drinking, stopped eating processed junk and learnt how to surf. I set small goals and made sure I focused on the things I enjoyed and found ‘easy wins’ each day until they became ‘richuals’ 🧘🏽♂️
Now I’m here... still enjoying the process and still learning lessons. It takes work daily!. But I promise you it’s worth it🦸🏽♂️. .
Anyway, sorry this was loooooong, but Hopefully this gets a few of you up and back on track, if you’re feeling it please share the good vibes, you never know, you might just change someone’s life 💜
I thought meditation would have been easier...
Finding a daily practice to keep up with while I was out in Bali surrounded by all the Zen 🧘🏽♂️... but turns out it’s just like anywhere else, plenty of ‘distractions’ and a busy monkey mind that’s constantly testing my attention 🐒. If a breath practice or some other meditation methods are new to you or you’ve been working on it for a while and still find it tricky... that’s ok.
A wise man I’ve told me 🧙🏽♂️- It’s called a ‘practice’ for a reason 💁🏽♂️ it’s going to be different day by day, but any effort you put in no matter how long, is worth it.
HOW: Create the ritual... shut-off from tech, find some space, pay attention to that moment, wherever you ground yourself, bring awareness to how you’re feeling and ‘check in’ simply observing your own breath. It’s a huge step in the right direction and will be making a difference I promise and could be a lifesaver when life becomes hectic🧘🏽♀️
‘Richuals’ - Maybe you can all book in some ‘you time’ now/this morning/today and find 5 (ideally 20 minutes) take some mindful breaths (start with 10 inhales and exhales through your nose).Build from there, maybe write down a gratitude list?
How do you feel after?
Need help, just ask? 💁🏽♂️
TAG someone that might want to try this🧘🏽♂️
