I've been in a bit of a reading slump this month and I'm not quite sure when I'll shake it off. I've been watching a lot of movies though! I've been sick on and off for the last 2 weeks but I finally got out of the house this weekend to spend some time with my friend and her family. Hopefully I'll read something good soon 😌🤞
Thanks to @septembercharmflowers for bringing this awesome @rbgcanada post to our attention! ******
A curious event is taking place here at RBG, something that happens only once every 10 years or so. It began in November but will shortly conclude in a magnificent burst of glory. An #agave is about to flower in our Cacti and Succulents collection.
Agave desmettiana ‘Variegata’ is a charismatic and eye catching succulent with curvaceous, lance shaped variegated foliage. However, what is really captivating is the recent production of a 2.5 meter (8.2 feet) tall flower spike awash with alluring lime green flowers.
The buds first began forming towards the end of November 2018 but in the last week these have now opened to begin a stunning floral display which will last for a short number of weeks.
Though this is a spectacular event, it also spells the end for this stunning plant. Agave desmettiana ‘Variegata’ is monocarpic, meaning that it flowers only once in its lifetime and then will die.
The production of seeds causes changes induced by chemicals that act as hormones redirecting resources from the roots and leaves to the production of seeds. This enormous bust of energy happens typically at about 10 years of age and ultimately leads to the plants death.
This plant does however, leave behind a legacy. Numerous offsets or pups are produced around the base of the plant which can be potted up to create new plants.
Join us in the #Cacti and #Succulent Collection for this rare, once-in-a-decade opportunity to see an agave in flower!
My two oxalis triangularis sitting on my bedroom window sill. They are so responsive to when they need a drink of water and then they are sad and emotional. I just love plants that tell me right up front what is wrong instead of slowly trying to die from my over powering love. 🔺🔺🔺
