I watched an amazing Ted Talk the other day that spoke about how to catch the winds of luck, and it all begins with taking small risks. The woman giving the talk, Tina Seelig, told a story of how she was sitting on a plane and decided to get out of her comfort zone by striking up a conversation with the man sitting next to her. She found out he was a publisher, so she took another risk by showing him a book proposal she was working on. He told her it was great, but not something his publishing house would be interested in. No luck. The plane landed, they exchanged cards, and went on their way. A couple months later, Tina reached out to invite him to one of her classes. He accepted the invitation and they kept in touch afterward, Tina sending him some projects her students had done. The man was so impressed that he told Tina he wanted to meet with her students to potentially create a book with them. While Tina was excited for them, she felt a bit crushed that her book was still going nowhere. No luck. After he came down with his colleagues to meet with her students, they all went out for lunch and one of the editors asked Tina if she had ever been interested in writing a book herself. She pulled out the same proposal she had shown the man on the plane a year prior, but this time, she received a positive response. Within two weeks, she had a contract, and within two years, her book had sold over a million copies worldwide. People love to tell her, “Oh, you’re so lucky!” But that luck resulted from a series of small risks she took.
Yes, sometimes people are born in unfortunate situations and yes, sometimes luck is a lightning bolt that either hits you with something wonderful or something terrible, but the winds of luck are always there, and if you’re willing to take small risks, you will grow a bigger and bigger sail to catch them. 📸: my mom
