The beginning of our year is quickly approaching! Registration is still open for The AfroKuumba Training Program of 2018-2019. As the director, I feel blessed. I’ve seen immense growth, desire and focus by prior and current members. This program is for dancers ages 3-16. Membership includes: weekly classes, discounted private lessons, guest instructors and workshops, discounted adult classes for our parents, performance opportunities (advanced dancers) and more.
We want to continue to entertain, educate & celebrate the communities we serve through black dance while training future generations in those specific art forms. Although we accept beginning dancers, this program is for all levels. Those seeking membership must be serious about dance. Black dance is beautiful, powerful, rich in history, requires strength, agility, great performance quality and more. This will be our 5th season. Our theme is “All The Way Live,” as we continue to raise the barre of, for and by our members.

#funfactfriday Known as the Matriarch of Black Dance, Katherine Dunham (1909 - 2006) founded the first major black modern dance company in America.Integrating the syncopated rhythms of Haiti, Cuba, Brazil and the Caribbean into American dance, she is credited with inventing the technique of body isolationism and incorporating it into her dance style. Katherine Dunham's influence and dance technique had a huge impact on the world of jazz dance. Today almost all jazz dancers use her technique in their dance. #katherinedunham#blackdance#jazzdance#dance#rhythm#dancetechnique#dancefacts#dancindreams
