Devastating update: Sao🐻 passed away!
Every time we leave for a mission, we are aware of the risks that it involves. Not only are we putting ourselves in harms way, but there is always a chance that the animals we are about to rescue won't make it. While death is a part of our work, as much as it is of life, this knowledge doesn't help us when we lose one of the lives we are trying to save. Today, we are left behind shaken and heartbroken. 💔
We are deeply saddened to inform you that Sao died on the way to our BEAR SANCTUARY Ninh Binh. Our team on-site was desperately fighting for his life for more than 12 hours and tried everything possible to help him. Although the sun bear’s health status was bad when we arrived at the zoo to rescue him, Sao was doing fine during and after the vet check performed by our veterinarian, Dr. Johanna Painer and our Vietnam bear team. He woke up from the anaesthesia quickly and was doing well. Nevertheless, five hours after we left the zoo, Sao suddenly started bleeding from his nose and mouth and his breathing became heavy. Our team immediately reacted and provided him with infusions, oxygen and several intensive-care medications. Unfortunately, all our efforts were futile and we lost him.
We know how much you all wanted him to start a new life at our sanctuary and we appreciate all of your support in the past days.
🌈Farewell, dear Sao! You will be missed, that’s for sure!

There are few places on this planet where the pulse of nature is so finely tuned as it is here. The return of the salmon to the rivers and creeks after their oceanic journey is the heartbeat that powers the people and wildlife on this coast, like this grizzly bear waiting for Coho salmon to go up the stream. But recently, we've seen its pulse weaken; there aren’t nearly as many fish as there once were, or should be. @PaulNicklen and our @SeaLegacy expedition team traveled the coast of BC this year to collect visuals that we hope will inspire dedicated people such as yourselves to maintain the health of this ecosystem.
Photograph by @PaulNicklen // Finding spirit bears was at the top of our list when we headed out on expedition up the coast of British Columbia earlier this fall. And we succeeded. We wanted to celebrate these amazing wild animals that thrive in the precious land and waters of the Great Bear Rainforest, especially after the big win that prevented the Northern Gateway Pipeline from going forward - and threatening them and their resources. But although we are extremely relieved that there are no pipelines posing an immediate threat, bears like this one are still at risk from human activity. We saw first hand how this year's low salmon numbers - due to issues such as open-net Atlantic salmon farms, overfishing, and climate change - translate into less food for these bears before they go into hibernation. Creek walkers, First Nations, scientists and fish counters reported some of the worst returns in recorded history. If salmon numbers continue decreasing, it's likely that bear populations will be affected as well. That's why we're continuing to work towards policies for sustainable fisheries and to protect the wildlife with whom we share this Earth. Join us in #TurningtheTide !
