Last weekend’s Saturday Samplings tasting @refectorywine was all about Syrah and provided a great opportunity to understand the different style of wines produced in different parts of the world from this elegant, yet earthy grape. There were 3 standouts to me, each very different expressions reflective of their region:
🍷 J.L. Chave Crozes-Hermitage Sélection Silène 2016. This is a classic Northern Rhône Syrah with aromas of rich blackberry, plum, blueberry, black raspberry with some leather and iron. Those aromas carry over to the palate with medium acidity, body and tannins to a medium finish with a tinge of blood. This is less gamey than other Northern Rhône’s I’ve tasted and more approachable to a broader audience who may be otherwise be turned off by the meaty character often found in these wines. Chave is a master of Syrah and has created a beautifully balanced example here in this affordable bottle from the region. Complex aromas, flavors and structure are all present, but no single element overpowers another. Refined and elegant. .
🍷Corvidae Lenore Syrah from Washington state. Far more fruit forward than the Rhône style, with bright aromas of boysenberry, blackberry, black cherry, blueberry and a hint of clean leather. Black and red fruit on the palate with some chocolate wrapped with medium+ acidity, medium body and tannin and a medium+ finish of ripe black fruit. Easy drinking but with some nice depth.
🍷Yalumba Patchwork Shiraz from the Barossa Valley in Southern Australia. This wine had the characteristic black fruit aromas along with pepper, tobacco and earth. The ripe black fruits continued onto the palate with the addition of spice, with medium+ acidity, medium+ tannin and higher alcohol (around 14%) than the Rhône or Washington Syrahs. This was a nice expression of Australian Shiraz with a fine balance between fruit, spice and tannins.
Pick up a few bottles of your varietal of choice from different parts of the world and create your own tasting party!

We thought it might be fun to share some before & after photos... we had the most amazing time renovating this beautiful space, it’s an experience we’ll never forget. So many wonderful memories were created here before we even opened for business, and now only 3 days in we have had more happy times. The sense of community is wonderful! Thanks to everyone who has supported us everyday in so many ways. Let the good times roll! 🙏🙏🙏🐝🐝
