Things to do before October 1
1. Find a reliable barber in San Francisco -- any recommendations?
2. Get my apartment organized (a lot of work to do)
3. Get a @bounce_sf workout in.
4. Become a bill-ionaire (ok, kidding on this one . . . well kind of)
Alright San Francisco . . . I'm all yours.
In law school there are seasons of stress where you feel all you can do is survive the moment. During these times you may depend on bad habits to manage the stress—very normal and natural because those bad habits can feel so good! But the post in the link discusses why it’s better, in the long run, to develop healthy habits during times of stress. Your body and mind will thank you for it and you’ll be better suited to work through stressful times in school (and in practice!).

I vividly remember learning to read. I was in a transition class as a newly arrived 6-year-old immigrant and ESL courses were non-existent in late 80s Indiana 🤷🏽♀️😂 but I was so lucky to have a great teacher who patiently taught us the sounds of each letter. It seemed like overnight I could read everything—and I basically did. Books were how I escaped problems, big and small. Later in life, books proved to not only be an escape, but a tool to help plan my future. I’m sure many of us relate (hello, we wouldn’t be lawyers if we didn’t love to read 🤓). Today’s post celebrates the beginning of #latinxheritagemonth! I’m sharing four books, by Latina authors, that jump-started my career and empowered me to take ownership of my Latindad. || what are your fave books by Latinas?!

Happy Independence Day! I’m also super excited for the start to Latinx Heritage Month! || I took a pic of this portrait, which hangs in the lobby of @mujereslatinasenaccion, after I presented in Spanish to a group of social service providers ☺️ MLEA is an amazing organization that focuses on the empowerment, development, and safety of fellow Latinas!

Raise your hand if you love going to networking events 🙋🏽♀️ —it’s not just me, right?!? For many, networking is awkward, tedious, and a chore BUT it’s a vital part of building your career. As we enter #hispanicheritagemonth there will be a lot of networking events to consider attending. The link in the bio shares why shouldn’t talk yourself out of going and ways to make these events worthwhile so that you stop dreading them & begin to enjoy them!

Nailing the interview is the easy part—the big obstacle is making your application so top-notch that there’s no way they’ll pass on interviewing you. Unfortunately a lot of little mistakes can knock you out of the running. Today’s post shares what mistakes to avoid and what steps you must take in order to keep your application viable. And yes it’s true—it’s the little things that make a huge difference.

Back at @loyola_law_chicago 🤓 || I’m facilitating a course this semester and am super pumped for it! The course focuses on acknowledging & interrupting implicit bias as one begins their professional development (& supes jealous that this didn’t exist when I was a student!)

Sadly, the latest survey results from #worklifelaw don’t paint the best picture. It’s still a struggle for attorneys of color. And women of color face even bigger barriers. There are many, many ways firms can combat this (if they really want to) but in the meantime, we have to deal with the realities of how implicit and explicit bias impact our careers. While there are some things we can’t control, there are also many tools we can use to overcome these problems and forge a career that suits us (search the “legal practice” tag on the blog for ideas!). || y muchas gracias to @mslagunitas for sharing @uchastingslaw’s post with me!

This year’s #mextalks we’re great! Not only did I get to hear from a bunch of great artists (including @erikalsanchez who wrote the amazing #notyourperfectmexicandaughter) but also got to learn about #cassandro, who has a bio pic coming out starring Gael Garcia 😍|| Also, have to mention how grateful I am for @latinospro! I was drowning as a 1L with no summer job prospects when I cold-emailed the legal director to ask if I could volunteer. They didn’t need the help and they could have said thanks, but no thanks (it’s not easy on-boarding interns), but they gave me a chance! I spent my 1L summer working on VAWAs, which led to my next internship, which lead to a career in immigration! Seriously, I was fumbling in the dark throughout law school and this internship became a flashlight (and I’m eternally grateful)!

Soon, the shine of a new semester will wear off and you may start hearing a voice that says you’ve made a mistake—you won’t succeed, law school isn’t for you. 😫|| While there will be a few who realize that being a lawyer truly isn’t for them, the reality is that for many of us who experience doubt, it’s less about the law and being a lawyer and more due to the culture of law school. The post I’m sharing today (link in bio) discusses what to consider when you realize you hate law school and how to determine what is temporary so you can push past it and earn your degree. 💕
