Dear precious adoptee, we forget this often don’t we?? We are not a problem!! It’s easy to forget ... We are spoken about in hushed tones with crooked looks - “how could she do this to her adoptive parents? She should be so grateful!” Then there’s the “Why does she wanna go dig all that up?? They gave her away once!” More and more layers of shame ... piled on top of the mountains of it!! And then there’s post-reunion “what is she after?? What does she REALLY want? Why is she REALLY here?” Seeking truth isn’t always what some expect from us or even desire. They’d rather us continue to live out our days in the dark and accept what we do not know - ignorant of the answers to basic human questions every person has a need and right to know. Sometimes this is interpreted as a “problem.” Our desire to know more about our truth and complete the puzzle of ourselves will never make us the problem. Their inability to handle my truth doesn’t make me the problem. The problem is too many people unwilling to give honest answers regarding a situation they created. If that’s problematic - then THAT is the problem! Keep fighting sister!💪💪💪
You are not a problem!!💗💗💗
I’m not amused at all today. If you are wondering why for the past handful of years, and for the foreseeable future, my artistic work has been steeped in female empowerment, in history, in civic engagement, in social activism, in black identity? If you’ve wondered why I’ve had to take direct action to protect myself from the negative effects of (particularly white) male fragility and racism? If you’ve wondered why I’m committed to shining brighter and standing in my truth and not relenting for one second? Take a look at the news.
What is happening in our government right now is the result of hundreds of years of privilege and active disenfranchisement of others. It’s the result of hundreds of years of entitlement and undeserved power. It is what happens when you expose the darkest, most disgusting corners of so-called humanity. It is what happens when you expose people for who they are, and they’re not ready to come to terms with that reality.
I am angry. I am hurt. I am sad. I am sick and tired of men not being held accountable for their actions, their insecurities and their complete lack of emotional maturity. I am exhausted by constant attacks against my race and gender. And I am taking action in every single way I know how. “When Petra picked up a guitar for the first time, it felt like home. She went to the New School where she majored in Politics and minored in Contemporary Music plus Global Studies, and while there she met a few Jazz department students who were willing to play with her. She never thought anything would come from it, but since then they’ve sold out three shows at Webster Hall, toured Japan with sponsorship from D’addario, and spent last year on the road with Drake Bell. Her hobby has turned into a career, and now she is working on her debut album. She hopes to continue touring the world and sharing her music with everyone willing to listen for years to come.
Petra’s other big passion is for social justice, and she always makes sure she is in tune with what’s going on in the world. Artists are able to use their platform for good, and she hopes that throughout her career she is able to use her voice to share important messages and fight for change. Before being able to tour full time, she worked as a general manager for her college radio station, where she always felt a rush helping students with their ideas and help the excel creatively, and if she had to work a job again she would do that. Sustainability means quite a bit to Petra. In her words, “If we don't find out how to reduce our carbon footprint in small ways, the world as we know it could disappear.” Petra, when shooting with you we could easily understand why your career has taken off like a rocket. You are a rock star and the rest of the world is just catching up to you. Keep on living the dream!”
