We all have those moments. I don’t know where they stem from, but I think for most of us it stems from a long time ago. Somebody back there, told us we weren’t enough. And somewhere along the lines, we believed them.
I was a nerd as a kid. But a pretty confident one. Then somewhere in my young adult life I got into a relationship that fed on every insecurity I had. I was told on the daily what was wrong with me. The job that didn’t make enough money. The hair that I hadn’t figured out how to tame. The skin freak outs that led me to over do it on the acne cleansers. This year has been one of the toughest... And I've been knocked about by some pretty big waves during my 31 years.
There are no words to describe the level of sleep deprivation I suffered as a result of Sophia's #sleepapnea. Basically, imagine how you feel after an all nighter and then times that by 300+ nights in a row. I was averaging 3-5 hours broken sleep each night.
My mental health suffered. For the first time in 10 years, thoughts of suicide arose. Not serious thoughts. But I toyed with the frightening pleasure of a long, deep, unrelenting and undisturbed sleep.
One of the by-products of loosing a parent to #suicide, which few people can understand or relate to (my partner completely misunderstands it); it becomes an option - a thought at least. Not a true option because you know the pain and ripple effects of suicide more than anyone. But your parent taught you that suicide is something people actually follow through with. It is not some mystical phenomenon. It is very real.
What kept me going through some of the toughest, longest days:
1. My future plans to show my daughter the world. To take her to the Valley of the Kings in Egypt.
2. To be there for my daughter when she, if she, becomes a mother herself. And to be there for her through any other liminal life stage.
3. "It too shall pass." In time everything passes. Some waves are bigger and more brutal than others. They cause more damage. But they still pass.
