Spring is here in Canada, the sun is out and thoughts have turned to solar watches today. In this segment of the watch market the Japanese dominate - with Citizen, Casio and Seiko all delivering excellent options that run on light.
The first solar powered watch was the Synchronar 2100 invented by Roger W Riehl in 1968. Citizen released the first solar watch with analog display – the Citizen Crystron in 1976. This watch began Citizen’s long-term commitment to solar powered watches, which has culminated in the very successful Eco-Drive line of watches that since 1996 have been the dominant brand of solar watches.
Luckily Citizen has improved the asthetics of their solar watches since 1976 and created a lot of incredible designs that have become WIS classics in their own right.
And according to Citizen the Eco Drive watch has eliminated the disposal of over 10 million batteries in North America alone. Win. Win. If you're missing one from your collection - you're missing out on the ultimate grab and go zero maintenance watch. 🌞☀️☀️🌄

Heuer Super Mareo (Nothing to do with the Nintendo plumber). I’d have loved to have been at the Basel watch show back in the 1960/70s when so many beautiful watches were being introduced! My annual cursory look at the Basel coverage confirms that apart from a glass of champagne (I’d prefer a DIPA 😉) it would be a long way to travel for such a relative lack of inspiration. Maybe it’s just my eyes but apart from the odd outlier where is the cutting edge design, where are the pathfinders at an affordable price point? Or is it all about the revamp/tribute/re-edition, online coverage & the marketing budget these days? #bahhumbug 🤓
