Homelessness and dignity.
It’s easy to ignore the people you see on the street asking for change. It’s easy to dismiss them because they probably got themselves into that situation, right? Alcohol, drugs, crime, whatever. You bear no responsibility for their mistakes.
That’s the rhetoric I grew up with, anyways.
But, humanity should never be dismissed. This man was so excited to finally have someone who would listen to him I couldn’t even get a word in to ask his name. He told me about the war in Vietnam. He told me he never touched the drink like his buddies. He told me about his wife (she’s battling cancer). He told me how he feels ignored.
Homelessness is not synonymous with invisibility. They’re people with stories and hardships most of us couldn’t even imagine. They are dignified and worthy of respect.
