Stretching is done because there is “tightness” or restriction in myofascia (muscle and fascia) or to increase a person’s range of motion (ROM). Myofascial tightness is usually due to a person being in a position for an extended period of time (think of a tight hip flexor from sitting). Stretching is a wonderful way to decrease myofascial tightness, but it shouldn’t be the ONLY thing you do to alleviate tightness. You should also actively contract muscles that may have been lengthened in a posture that was held for too long. For example, many people have sleepy glutes and don’t know how to contract them because a) their hip flexors are shortened and glutes are lengthened due to sitting and b) their nervous system “forgets” how to use them because, well, they’re not being used. In summary, stretching is important to alleviate tight myofascia, but retraining the nervous system to fire sleepy muscles is equally significant! The body works best when it is aligned and balanced. If you spend too much time in one position (like sitting in a car for an hour or more), then your body lets you know. Your body, like life, operates on the principle of yin and yang. That is definitely an oversimplification as there are many other variables that cause tightness in the myofascia such as hydration, nutrition, sleep, stress, etc... But sometimes it’s necessary to simplify things to make something practical. Stay tuned for part 2 of this post where we unpack the efficacy of stretching to increase ROM. ///
